Share your latest charity...

Well, we have a "Share your latest purchase" thread, here is the philanthropic version of it :). Pretty simple idea, share your latest act of charity be it a donation, volunteer work or just simple act of signing a petition. Maybe you will encourage someone else to also pitch in... Amounts are not important, just an act of kindness goes a long way in making this world a better place for every one.

Often when im on trips to country's who have a poor people, i give the money first hand to those who need it.
So i have this box where i put away money, and when its time to travel i take it with me.

Thats my version of charity.. works for me:)

I do not trust these organizations.

I do not trust organizations either.
But there's an organization found by friends of ours who's kid was killed at the age of 13-14(I think) by his friend who was also around his age.
They did a charity concert so they can get the money needed to open several centers where help will be given to kids with aggression problems. I was there selling stuff, helping build the stage, throwing garbage. It was a beautiful day.
I attend events of this type and participate from time to time. I give money to poor people on the streets but I've never donated big amounts of money to anyone or any organization yet.

Made a small donation to some children's charity in China since the lady was actually polite.

Yea, that is definitely something to be wary about. Most of my time and donations go towards local animal shelters and dog rescue centers - that I have first hand knowledge of, of of doing good work. Of the ones that are operate far away from me - like Animal Asia and WSPA, I usually pick them from news reports of doing good work than solicitations. I also check out resources like http://www.charitynavigator.org/ and http://www.charitywatch.org/ before deciding. In the end, I see it as it is better use of my money than giving it to Apple for yet another IPhone I do not need. :)

I have a soft spot for Vietnam vets, who were treated like sh** by this country. I don't carry cash on me, but if/when I would, Veteran panhandlers are the ones I'd give any to.

I agree... but what's going on?
