Supra Report: Supra Successor High on Toyota's Agenda

The Toyota Supra is a sports car and grand tourer manufactured and developed by the Toyota Motor Corporation beginning in 1978. The name "supra" is a definition from the Latin prefix, meaning "above", "to surpass" or "go beyond". The 5th generation of the Supra is assembled alongside the G29 BMW Z4 in Graz, Austria by Magna Steyr.

If anything, the success of the Toyota GT86 and the Nissan GT-R has proved that the Japanese sports car market is still relevant. After experience a quiet period for the past decade, Japanese sports cars have emerged with venom. The days of the Maxda RX7, Toyota Supra and Nissan 300ZX have been superseded by new different models.
We’re now hearing that at least one of those legendary models, the Toyota Supra, will once again be available to purchase. The news comes from GT86 chief engineer Tetsuya Tada who told news agency Asia One that he has personally been asked by Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda to create a new Supra ‘as soon as possible’.
The same news source also reports that this will be one of two new models to come from the Japanese auto giant. Add these rumours to the reality of the GT-R, the GT86 and the soon-to-be Honda NSX and it’s safe to say that the Japenese revival is coming on strong. Let’s just hope that the Supra retains an element of competitive pricing.

Many years we here about Supra, NSX and RX-7 revival. But I think we are already closer than BMW M is to any true sportscar.

Build this one right and I will buy one. Period.

Supra was the car I wanted but couldn't afford to insure way back in the day, along with the 90's 300ZX from Nissan.

BMW and Toyota together on a sports car? Sounds wonderful to me.

I hope they build a Supra this time that can actually "handle" and is not an understeering pig with a flimsy luxury car based chassis.

You can be sure what Toyota will build will be a nice car. But don't expect old-school car (like I in general like).

Toyota Supra concept to debut in Detroit - report

Could preview a production model
The rumor mill is back in action as Autoblog is reporting a Supra concept will debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Citing "well-placed members of the Toyota team," the website is reporting the company will unveil a new concept that will preview the upcoming production model. Toyota declined to confirm the rumors but company chairman Takeshi Uchiyamada has stated he wants the jointly-developed BMW-Toyota sports car to be a high-performance model that is comparable to the Supra. Toyota GT 86 chief engineer Tetsuya Tada has also said the company has asked him to "make a successor to the Supra as soon as possible."

We're taking everything with a grain of salt but previous reports have indicated the production model could be launched in 2017 and feature a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine which is outfitted with a hybrid system.

Convertible Next Generation Toyota Supra Might Come True

For those liking to feel the wind in their hair, the fourth generation Toyota Supra was also offered with a pop-out targa roof. Guys that saw the first Fast and Furiousmovie know what we’re talking about here - turn the handle, push upwards and you can see the sky.

However, the fifth generation Supra seems to be on its way now and this time Toyota might offer a fully convertible version. At least, that’s what chief engineer Tetsuya Tada told Drive Australia last week at the 24 hours Nurburgring race, along with some other interesting things.

Mr. Tada said that the company is still focused on placing three sportscars on the market. We have the GT 86 already and two more cars will join pack soon, out of which one will be a convertible.

"Our final goal [is that] we want to do three sports models from Toyota and at least one convertible model will be realistic."

According to what Tada-san said next, the GT 86 convertible plan hasn’t been ditched yet, but modifying the car to sell it now will cost too much to be a feasible project. And since we still have no clear word about Toyota’s small sportscar, the next Supra might be the one to come by as a convertible.

Since the next Supra is in the works, Toyota can underpin its structure to accommodate a convertible version from the beginning. Mr. Tada also said the FT-1 is just the first of a multiple-design study series that will eventually draw the final form of the production sportscar, with a mid-engined model also being considered.

"FT-One is the first of the design studies and there are no technical or mechanical requirements yet," he said.”We will make this more clear in the future."
