Kia will reportedly launch its first sports sedan sometime next year.

Citing people familiar with the matter,Reuters says the model will go into production in May 2017 and be a sports sedan that competes with the models such as the Audi A5 Sportback andBMW 4-Series GranCoupe.

Little else is known about the car but will reportedly be smaller than the Genesis Coupe and feature rear-wheel drive. The car is also slated to be offered with three different engines that have displacements of 2.0-, 2.2-, and 3.0-liters.

The car is reportedly codenamed the CK and it is scheduled to be built in South Korea following the transfer of Rio production to Mexico. Kia expects to build 60,000 units annually and the model will reportedly be billed as a sporty alternative to its German competitors.

While Kia models are rarely seen as sporty or luxurious, the company has been toying around with the idea of a rear-wheel drive sports sedan for years. Things kicked off in 2011 when Kia introduced the GT concept which featured rear-wheel drive and a turbocharged 3.3-liter V6 engine that produced 390 horsepower and 394 pound-feet of torque.
