Porsche VTG: Next World Premiere

Wunderkind of Wheels
The very concept of turbocharger technology is linked inseparably with the name Porsche and the Porsche brand. It was back in October 1974 that the German sports car manufacturer from Stuttgart launched the world's first series production sports car with an exhaust gas turbocharger. And ever since, every new generation of the Porsche 911 Turbo has fascinated enthusiasts the world over with a special highlight in technology: the intercooler, bi-turbo, VarioCam Plus, as well as the title "Cleanest Car in the World" have all set the benchmark in turbocharger development. Now the highlight of the next generation of the Porsche Turbo is spelt out clearly in three powerful letters: VTG.

Sounds like a gr8 thing... cant wait to see the new Turbo and se it doing it thang.. and kicking ass on the streets..:D

Very very interesting technology and impressive progress by Borg Warner (they're so hot right now with their forced induction technology!)

So, now we can expect and even more responsive 911 with less lag and huge top end.
Can't wait.

Yep! Should be a world of difference! Amazing how technology is progressing.

Thanks for the news The Artist. It nice to hear that the pioneers have something new to bring to the table. :eusa_clap :eusa_danc

Porsche pioneers? Don't make me laugh! Porsche = evolution at it's best, they hardly ever 'pioneer'.

BorgWarner got their knowledge from the former KKK acquisition. The main R&T center for charging systems - and therefore the developement center for the VTG charger - is still the old KKK location in Kirchheimbolanden/Germany

That is a very interesting article - it just reinforces the brilliance of Porsche's engineers - I have total respect :usa7uh:

That is a world's first:

"Introducing the new model, Porsche will be presenting the world's first turbocharged gasoline engine with variable turbine geometry (VTG)"

Porsche is a very innovative company, I don't have a clue what you're talking about.

1966: Porsche 911 S 2.0, world's first production car with inner-vented brake discs.
1974: The Turbo was the World's first production sports car with exhaust gas turbocharger.
1975: Porsche becomes the world's first carmaker to introduce the hot-galvanized bodyshell as standard.
1975: Porsche introduces the 924, the first Transaxle sports car with the engine at the front, the transmission and drive wheels at the rear.
1981: Start of 944 production featuring electronic fuel injection (Motronic), first heated oxygen sensor worldwide.
1985: Launch of the Porsche 959, a spearhead in new technology. A limited number are built. In 1986, it is the first sports car to win the Paris-Dakar Rally.
1986: Porsche 944 Turbo first European car fitted as standard with driver and front passenger airbags for the USA.
1991: Porsche becomes first German manufacturer to fit all left-hand-drive models with driver and front passenger airbags as standard.
1994: Porsche becomes the first manufacturer to introduce water-based paint for repair/touch-up purposes.
1995: 911 Turbo with bi-turbo engine, first car worldwide fitted as standard with on-board diagnosis II, hollow-welded 18-inch hollow-spoke wheels (a Porsche patent), lightweight spoiler cover in advanced RTM technology.

Here are just a few of the things they've done. I'll leave it to you to research other things if this still isn't enough to sway your opinion.

gustavo you beauty! Thanks for bringing that to my attention - I had no idea that KKK was snapped up by BW. When did this happen. KKK turbos have long been synonymous with turbocharged Porsches. Explains it all now...

So here's my thought of the day:

Who are the real innovators here: Porsche or Borg Warner? Does anyone know if Porsche engineers collaborated on the design of the new VTG turbo or did Porsche merely say "we have a need for better turbo response - Borg Warner you make it happen..."?

Maybe it's a joint effort?

Carbon, I'm almost sure that Porsche were the first to introduce carbon-ceramic brakes in production cars with their PCCB systems...?

Maybe klier isn't that far off the mark though, as a whole Porsche aren't really massive innovators along the lines of the big 3 but what can be said is that they remain committed to their astonishing track record of consistent improvement. Every time the world says this is as good as it can possibly get from Porsche they go and raise the bar higher still. Innovators? Perhaps...

The benchmark? Unequivocally.

Well put, Martin! Agreed! :usa7uh:

:o

Starting in 1997 BorgWarner acquired the KKK shares from Penske and become the main owner of KKK.

As long ago as that! :eek2: :o :eek2: :o
Ah, back then I relied on car magazines for my car knowledge.
Thank God for the Internet!

Shot dude! :usa7uh:

Yeah, this is news - KKK acquired by BorgWarner.

I'd also say that this 'Porsche' innovation is a sign of the times. The VW TwinCharger was also done by BorgWarner. The night vision systems in the S-class and such are also supplied by external OEM companies. Most ESP and ABS systems are done by companies such as Bosch.

Much 'innovation' is just the car company buying the license and the product of another company, and then putting their brand on it, if that.

That said, this promises to be something good for turbos. I thought variable turbine geometry wasn't exactly that new.. but it should do for the internals of a turbo what variable valve timing did for er, the cylinder's breathing capabilities - more efficiency, more performance. No disadvantage, cost and complexity aside.
