Porsche to Double Car Models by 2008

The AIADA newsletter reported that Porsche plans to double the number of car models it builds over the next three years, according to The Detroit Free Press.

The company plans to build two new models: the Cayman S and Panamera. The Cayman S is a small two-seat coupe based on their Boxster Model which came out a decade ago. The Panamera will be Porsche’s first ever four-door car and is scheduled to come out in late 2008.

Sounds exciting, their whole line-up sounds like a hit! So much going on for Porsche these days, i would say its a sound investment.

Just as long as they don't attempt to stretch both ways whilst they're at it - broadening the lineup as well as reducing the entry level price. I don't want to see a Porsche hatchback!

I like Porsche and all, but will their good fortune ever run out if they continue to broaden the lineup? Or will they just take it all in?

I think its just what people were waiting for, a more affordable, yet still exclusive sport/sedan kind of car.

Surely they got a lot of slack with the Cayenne, but its hot and a great seller for them, im sure they are pleased and have buyers lined up for the new fleet, especially the Panamera. Finally a Porsche sedan for the family guy who needs a four door, that always wanted a Porsche, but never found it practical for his needs!

I know that Porsche will launch a smaller than Cayenne SUV and Panamera. I wonder if they plan to make other new models too.

I understand why Porsche is doing this. Unfortunately it is not enought with having 3 expensive cars in your line up. You need to seel enough cars to cover the bills an in the automotive you either own other manufacturers or owned by one. Since Porsche doesn't want to be owned by a company like Ford or VW diversification is the way to go. Personally I don't see diversification as a problem as long as Porsche doesn't produce a 200k car or something.

I believe that their goal is to sell 100k cars annually by 2010.

Well, there is nothing wrong with 200k units a year IMO.
Certaintly the Boxster,Cayenne and CGT have lifted the company in my eyes.
Who cares what some grumpy, abstinent 60 year olds think ?!

Believe it or not Cayman is the model that made Porsche more attractive in my mind. It's cheaper than 911 but still better looking and just as capable as 911 in the Cayman S version.
