The 1971 Le Mans was a great race for Porsche. It was the year of the 917, a car with a magnesium tubular frame that weighted only 42 kg, that managed an average speed of 250 km/h with Jackie Oliver behind the wheel. Helmut Marko and Gijs van Lennep drove the car at the 24h Le Mans for 5,335.3 km, a distance record that comes to a race average of 222.304 km/h that remained untouched for decades. The 917 became the most photographed vehicle, drawing a record interest.

Porsche's history with the 24 hours of Le Mans is full of successes and that is how they intend to continue, as Porsche is having some very interesting plans for the 2014 race. Until then, enjoy the video below and take a look at Porsche's mini site (link) where you can find more similar material.
