The BMW Z models are a line of roadsters manufactured by German automaker BMW. The Z stands for Zukunft (German for future), and has been produced in four different series with six generations consisting of roadster, coupé, sports car, and concept variants.
The introduction of the M Coupé and M Roadster in the Z3 line marked the first of the Z series to have a high-performance BMW M variant. The first generation Z4 also continued to offer M Coupé and M Roadster variants. The current Z4 (G29) uses BMW's (B58B30) inline-six, its platform is the basis for the current Toyota Supra.
I would buy Z4 3.0si Coupe over the new Z4 becuase of driving dynamics. But of course the new Z4 looks a lot better than previous Z4 Roadster. I hope it comes as a Coupé one day A Coupe has the cool factor the Roadster is missing.
The new one looks so gorgeous in photos, but left me a bit underwhelmed in person. The first, and usually most reliable, local review here was not positive either.
Talk about change. The old Z4 is very dear to me and is one of my favorite designs ever, but I'm astounded by how aged it appears next to the new python. But it doesn't have the obsolete look if seem on it's own without the new model on the radar.
The new on is something not seen on a BMW in years, very sensual....achingly attractive. Too bad I haven't seen in it person beyond the normal dull silver/grey BMW used for it on the show circuit this year. I'd love to see it in Black, Red and Dark Blue or some kind of rich Green.
Not at all, I feel the Z4 caters to a much much smaller group of people when it comes to design, it took me a while to accept the way it looked too. I find that a lot more thought went into the design of the E85 than people give it credit for; where as the new one seems to use lines that will be more universally accepted. Personally I find the E89's profile to be a bit bloated while the E85's is defined and lean. The E85 will surely be more of an icon than the E89 I know this.
I like both cars but the original is what really does it for me.
Very much so. It's Bangle's biggest trophy is the very car that defined BMW's modern progressive design. You have it right there, BMW's design philosophy in a nut shell; captivating, debatable, courageous and innovative. Ironically I hated it when I first saw it, but overtime my appreciation for it as a design piece came to grow into eternal applause for Bangle in orchestrating and approving the design.
The new model is a refined evolution with a more "universal appeal" and less controversy. Same clean design can be seen in the X6 which features a safe but very well crafted design.
