Peugeot 306 GTI-6, or Rallye, or... 205 GTI?

Hey guys,

I'm just wondering if anybody has ever driven or owned the 306 GTI-6 or Rallye.

I'm now having a MR2 and I think after a couple of months of ownership I feel that the two-seater restriction demands a very capable, truly special car. Sadly, I think the MR2 doesn't meet this expectation and the trade-offs of 2-seat only selfishness is weighing down on its practicality heavily!

I'll be happy to keep it as a second car but unfortunately I can only afford one, so it has to go. Good news is the car probably wouldn't lose a lot of value. Now, I'm looking to get myself back in a hot hatch.

I've a couple of VW GTIs, but nothing from the French. Two cars has endeared to me deeply - the 306 GTI-6/Rallye and the 205 GTI.

However I'm leaning towards the former because it's newer (hopefully less problems) and also feels just bit more modern and practical. The 205 GTI is tiny.

So, anybody has anything to chip in?

M

I haven't driven neither the 306 nor the 205 GTI, but I have driven the 106 Rallye and it was a very good drive. Since my daily driver is a first generation Clio, I was surprised to see that they are not much different. Both cars have a tendency to oversteer in corners and even a 100% stock Rallye has a firm enough ride, compared to the Clio. I'd suggest that you also consider the first generation Clio Williams, if the fact that it's from the early 90's is not a problem for you.

I have a regular 306.
Interior is cheap and will make noise regularly. Average brakes, Top Handling.

Sounds about 'French' right then, and what I've feared!

Go for the GTi-6 Rallye. It was epic.

Thing is, I've had a couple of hot hatches before, so I'm wondering if this would be a repeat of the same experience or whether I'll get to learn some new tricks I've never tasted before. I want to own something special/can teach me something new about motoring. Owned the MkV GTI and Mk2 GTI before, which I must admit is a German bias... Is lift-off oversteer really that accessible (and controllable) on a public road on a car like the 306 Rallye?

Does it have to be a Pug? What about a previous gen Renaultsport Clio 182 Trophy or Cup? That'll give you lift-off oversteer ;)

Yeah first choice was a 182 Cup, but insurance for 'em are quite a bit more!

Peugeot

Peugeot is a French brand of automobiles owned by Stellantis. Founded in 1810, Peugeot is regarded as the oldest car company in the world. On 20 November 1858, Émile Peugeot applied for the lion trademark. Armand Peugeot (1849-1915) built the company's first car steam tricycle. They joined forces with Léon Serpollet in 1886; this was followed in 1890 by an internal combustion car with a Panhard-Daimler engine.
