First engine goes into production in late 2012
Opel and Vauxhall have announced plans to introduce three new engine families within the next 12 months.
The first new engine will be a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder petrol with direct injection and Start/Stop technology. Dubbed the SIDI ECOTEC, the engine will have several different outputs and be offered in a variety of models starting in late 2012.
Detailed specifications haven't been announced, but Opel says the engine can produce up to 200 hp (149 kW / 203 PS) and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) of torque. More importantly, fuel consumption and CO2 emissions have been cut by 13 percent compared to the current turbocharged 1.6-liter petrol.
According to Thomas Johnen, Opel / Vauxhall's director of gasoline engines, "Our new 1.6 liter direct injection engine is a real giant in terms of torque. Power builds up very smoothly and quietly."
