S-Class OLED technology to appear on European Cars in 2 years - S class possibly?

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class, formerly known as Sonderklasse, is a series of full-sized top-of-the-line luxury sedans and coupés produced by Mercedes-Benz. Officially introduced in 1972 with the W116, it has remained in use ever since.

I am not sure if you have heard of OLED. In my own understanding OLED is a very exciting technology that will replace today's display technology, including Plasma, LCDtv, LED LCD TV. It is also possible to use this technology for creative lighting solutions.

Pros:
Extremely high contrast, extremely high response time, extremely thin, energy efficient, flexible physically, and can be made transparent.

Cons:
expensive to manufacture, organic materials may degrade over time

I came across an interesting news here:
Novaled is working on OLED lighting for a European car maker

W222 will be rolling out 2012/2013. Will the S class feature extreme display screens or super fancy/moody lighting? :t-cheers:

how about speedo on windshield? or a 'screen saver' that gives 360 view of an aquarium?:D

Hope my post will bring up some discussion and awareness on this exciting tech :D

check these links for other interior lighting concepts based on OLED

Wouldnt surprise me if it debuts in the S class..

^
If it is going to debut in any car in the not to distant future it will be the S-class.
Nice tech!
:t-cheers:

I think Sony or Panasonic already have OLED TV, some phones also use OLED screens, so these screens should start to appear on cars soon.

The car in the picture is called "EDAG Light Car - Open Source". EnI talked about it here: http://www.germancarforum.com/pit-g...r-main-headlight-structures-2.html#post377937

There are also some other concepts that have OLED tech like the VW Viseo concept: http://www.germancarforum.com/volkswagen-lounge/20199-volkswagen-viseo-concept-volkswagen-design.html

I think Sony or Panasonic already have OLED TV, some phones also use OLED screens, so these screens should start to appear on cars soon.

OLED screens are in fact already used, I believe the 2010 Lexus RX was the first production vehicle to feature one:

Currently we know of one car model that includes OLED displays - the Lexus 2010 RX. It has a white OLED display, supplementing the main 8" display.

But this piece of news jackywhatever posted is about the use of OLEDs in lighting not in screens. ;)

Interesting tech, hadn't heard of this.......

It also is completely washed out by sunlight - as I've seen with my Zune HD - so unless the technology has improved, which I dare say it has, I don't see it being used in cars.

OLED won't make it to the new S-Class. The technology is great but need further development before it's bullet proof enough to be used in a car that has a life span of 20-30 years, if not more. OLED uses organic compounds and degrade over time.

The original article that jackywhatever posted is about OLED lighting, which hasn't been done yet in production cars.

However, an OLED display is already used in the new Lexus RX. ;)

The new 2010 Lexus RX has an OLED display next to the speedometer, creating a visually beautiful and stunning effect.

Where will OLED be used in future cars?

Even today, we can see several interesting usages for OLED displays/lighting in cars:

* Dashboard displays
* Windshield transparent OLEDs
* Internal lighting
* External lighting
* Back-window alerts and messaging (as seen on the EDAG prototype)

LED technology as bulb replacement is in it's infancy, and therefore I don't think that OLED will catch on soon. It uses biologically degradable materials and might not cope to well with the harsh treatment passenger cars go through in 10-20 years.

It took about 7 years, but we are now finally seeing OLED tail lights on some cars.

Absolutely no doubt the W223 will have them too, and probably the facelift of the G11 as well.

Nice revive @Monster !! Maybe put it in the general discussion or tech section though to keep it more general. We can keep this updated when new cars with OLED tech arrive

Screens inside cars really need the OLED screens too, particularly now that traditional dials are quickly fading away. LCD simply doesn't cut it visually. Black needs to be black.

BMW managed to introduce OLED lights as standard on some of their cars earlier than they did it with LEDs...:happy001:
