2010 Mercedes-Benz C180 CDI: entry-level in style

With the rising of the eco trend among consumers and the global economic crisis, automotive carmakers have begun to offer less expensive and more economical entry-level versions for several vehicles in their line-ups.

Take the German medium diesel saloon class for example. Audi had introduced a 120 hp version as an entry-level model for the diesel A4 range. BMW did the same and brought the 115 hp 316d model to the market. Mercedes-Benz follows suit with the introduction of the new 120 hp C180 CDI model. Notably, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class C180 CDI has the same 2.1 liter engine from its bigger brothers, but the carmaker has electronically downtuned it to generate 120 hp. With this unit, the car will return a fuel consumption figure of 5 liters per 100 km (combined cycle) and it will have emissions of 130 grams of CO2 for every kilometer. The C180 CDI goes from zero to 100 km/h in 10.4 seconds and has a top speed of 215 km/h. The new version of the Mercedes-Benz C-Class will be offered in both saloon and station wagon versions. Pricing has not been released yet!

The C with this 180CDI engine is just brilliant. Like the 316i/d is.

It's ideal for people who look for a quality car for their basic everyday needs, unless they do a lot of highway driving. It's for those that need something bigger or with higher status than a Golf, but do not need much power. If you are to use a Mercedes in your everyday commute to the city centre, then this car is fantastic.

If parking (and of course money) was not an issue for me, this would be my choise of an everyday car. Good looking, status, build quality, dependable, reliable. My current commute car has 78hp. Why would I (or anybody) need more than 120hp to go downtown?

Yeah, the trend to have 180hp in an average family car is just useless. 120hp with a torquey turbodiesel is largely sufficient, even given the weight of modern cars, to drive comfortably in every situation.

I personally think a 115 hp 3er and 120 hp C class are brand unworthy and they only exist because they are cash cows.

There is absolutely ZERO, ZIP driving pleasure to be found in such a car.

After 5 years with a 180hp family saloon, I do believe that this power is not always useless. There have been times that I needed the power for overtake, or that I enjoyed it on empty roads late nights, or that I feel safe and comfortable on long journeys. But that's 2% of the car's use. Since I ended up using it everyday, I believe that for my everyday commute and the rest needs 120hp is enough, just like my father's Renault Laguna which is his daily commuter. If the car is meant to be driven for journeys of for the fun of it in proper roads, then that power is needed!

No, they are not completely unworthy. You know, a 316i can still drift (not like a M3, but still drift) and you can have fun with the tail on some bends, if you know the car very well. In the end, with a 120km/h speed limit, there are not much that you can do, no matter how big your engine is...

Not everybody's after the pleasure of a powerful engine...

I have more fun with my 78hp Clio than with my 180hp Volvo. And it's not just because it's a Volvo :D
