C4 New Citroen C4 revealed

The Citroën C4 is a car produced by Citroën, part of Stellantis. It was positioned to be the successor to the Citroën Xsara. The first generation production started in September 2004. For its first two generations, the C4 was a compact car/small family car, but it has been redesigned as a subcompact crossover SUV for its third generation. In June 2020, the third-generation C4 was released in the form of coupe SUV, abandoning the traditional C-segment hatchback/saloon body style.

New Citroen C4 revealed

Citroen's new C4 will take on the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf with a hi-tech cabin and much-improved fuel economy and CO2 emissions when it hits UK dealers early next year.

The model is described as “brand new” by Citroën but although all of its body panels have changed, it still sits on a modified version of the chassis that underpins the current C4. The new model is 50mm longer, 20mm wider and 30mm taller. It’s also likely to be lighter, thanks to new construction techniques and the use of laser welding in manufacturing.

The new C4’s styling is a neat evolution of the current car’s. It retains the pronounced curve in the roofline but adopts more C5-like front-end styling, particularly the headlights. In contrast to the outgoing car, which featured a ‘coupé’ version, the new C4 will be available as a five-door only.

It’s clear from this model that Citroën is keen to create a clear distinction between bread-and-butter models and their premium DS-badged stablemates. A performance variant of the C4 is said to be unlikely, and the gap between this car and the DS4 is expected to be wider than the difference between the C3 and the recently launched DS3.

The engine line-up is likely to remain similar to the current C4’s, although this will be the first production Citroën to get the e-HDi system previewed at the Geneva show earlier this year.

It mates a small electric motor to an as-yet-unspecified diesel engine that’s almost certain to be a 1.6-litre unit. Citroën says the powerplant, along with low-resistance tyres and stop-start, will deliver CO2 emissions of 109g/km at launch and 99g/km on future models.

Citroën is placing increased emphasis on the C4’s interior, which features a 408-litre boot (more than 20 litres larger than a Focus’s) and a number of personalisation options.

Dashboard controls will enable users to change the colour of the backlighting behind the instrument panel, and set polyphonic sound alerts as easily as changing mobile phone ringtones.

The line-up of technical features includes lane departure and blind-spot warning systems, adaptive headlights, a speed limiter with road memory settings and eTouch, an electronic system that monitors driving patterns and offers advice on how to improve fuel economy.

The new C4 will make its public debut at the Paris motor show in September. UK sales will start early next year.

As a mainstream model goes it's not too bad; sure, it's a little generic and unexciting but the look has broad appeal and the interior looks great - a far cry from the weird layout of the outgoing car. Of course, those looking for a bit of pizzazz shan't find it here - that's what the new DS range is intended for. Clearly the DS4 ought to be more avantgarde and sporty than its mass-market sibling.

Interestingly, I see elements of the Audi A1 (C-pillar and roofline) and the VW Polo (front overhand and lower bumper) in this new C4.

I think it looks quite handsome. This shot in particular:

Obviously not as quirky and daring as other models, but due to the immense success of conservative designs in this category (ie. VW Golf and New Focus), Citroen have had their hand forced to produce a conservative, but handsome design in order to have a chance in the segment.

I suspect the more daring and Citroen-esque design will come with the introduction of the DS4.

In this segment the VW Golf rules, so the C4 is spot on - as with the Golf it's pure understated luxury and design IMO. A conservative design would stand the test of the cars lifespan, overkill in design as well as too bold of a design would not age well.

I like it, it's a car I'd see myself buying.:usa7uh:

Same here! Looks good enough, it's conservative styled, yet is modern and the interior looks good as well. If it's priced a few thousand euros less than the equivelant Golf, then it can be a bargain!

I do like it. It's clear that with the generic design Citroen are trying to emulate Golf 6 and hoping to achieve the same success. If it's reliable then they're 1 up already.

THE NEW CITROËN C4: FIRST DETAILS REVEALED

Citroën has released first details of the brand new C4. Designed to exceed the highest expectations, the New Citroën C4 boasts a real positive energy - with exceptional levels of quality, style, interior space and occupant comfort, as well as responsive handling and impressive environmental credentials.

As with the New C5 in 2008 and New C3 earlier this year, the New Citroën C4 once again demonstrates the expertise of the brand in creating stylish and innovative vehicles with relevant technological advances.

With its sculpted lines and high quality finish, New C4 cuts a distinctive profile, striking an impression of strength, stability and balanced proportions. Defined and flowing surfaces, such as the purposeful front end and rear spoiler, hint at the model's optimised aerodynamics. The tasteful addition of chrome detailing combines with the dynamic headlight styling and sculpted alloy wheels to give the new model a premium presence.

Promising precise control and accomplished handling, New C4's driver focused cabin environment combines with impressive acoustic comfort and soundproofing to deliver a true impression of on-road confidence.

New C4 features compact exterior dimensions and generous internal volumes that make it spacious and thoroughly versatile. At just 4.33m long, 1.79m wide and 1.49m high, New C4 is just 5cm longer, 2cm wider and 3cm taller than the current model. The 408-litre boot is the biggest in its class, with practical square dimensions and a lower sill that makes loading even easier.

In addition to optimised accessibility and practicality, the New C4 offers a genuine feeling of well-being on-board
- with spacious, comfortable seating and impressive occupant headroom. Personal comfort in the New C4 can be tailored to suit individual requirements with users able to adjust the colour of the driver's instrument display, select their own 'polyphonic' sound alerts, finely adjust the intensity of the air-conditioning and even immerse themselves in the rich surround-sound of the new audio system. Some models even come with a new massage function on the front seats.

Alongside existing range technologies, such as EGS (Electronic Gearbox System), hill start assist, automatic electric parking brake, Lane Departure Warning System and Xenon dual-function directional headlamps, New C4 will be available with convenient and useful new technologies - some of which are unique to the segment. These include a new blind-spot monitoring system, a cornering light function, cruise control and speed-limiter with road speed memory settings, and an innovative new service called eTouch.

As well as offering on-board emergency assistance, Citroën's eTouch system enables drivers to monitor their driving patterns and fuel consumption, and receive advice on how to improve their fuel economy. The system also allows drivers to consult their vehicle's technical status and monitor any necessary maintenance or servicing requirements.

Designed to be an environmentally respectful family car, New C4 uses the latest Citroën technology to reduce its environmental impact. New C4 will be available with Citroën's new micro-hybrid e-HDi powertrains, which feature the latest generation Stop & Start system that helps deliver CO2 emissions as low as 109g/km at launch - and 99g/km on future models. Michelin Energy™ Saver tyres are also specified to help achieve these low emissions and to boost fuel economy. The control of the car's overall weight - in spite of the increased dimensions and added equipment - has been achieved using new technologies, such as laser welding, in the model's construction. The use of 15% 'green' materials - for example, re-cycled polyamide components - also enhances New C4's environmental credentials.

The New C4 will be produced at the Mulhouse PSA Peugeot Citroën plant in France and will premiere at the Paris Motor Show in September.

Not bad...if they use more powerful engines it could be a serious alternative for the boring and uninspired VW Golf...

Not ugly, but boring. The Golf might be a bit boring as well, but at least it has that quietly handsome look. The old C4 was a bit quirky and much more distinctive, this one is just another hatchback.

2015 Citroen C4 goes official with modest cosmetic updates and new engines

Features a new seven-inch touchscreen

Following this morning's leak, Citroën has unveiled the facelifted C4 which comes with several visual and hardware tweaks.

The changes can be noticeable at the front where there are new LED daytime running lights housed in darker headlight clusters while the back features slightly modified taillights featuring a "3D effect". Customers can choose from two new colors (Stone Gray and Platinum Grey) and a variety of alloy wheels in sizes of up to 18 inches. Inside the cabin there are two new upholstery choices (Liberia Grey and Rayados Mistral knit) and a seven-inch touchscreen display replacing some of the buttons and knobs to provide a less cluttered layout.

Under the hood Citroën has added new Euro 6-compliant engines, starting out with a PureTech 110 developing 110 HP (81 kW) at 5,500 rpm and 205 Nm (151 lb-ft) at 1,750 rpm channeled to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox which allows the French hatchback to provide a fuel consumption of 4.7 liters / 100 km with CO2 emissions of 110 g/km.

The PureTech 130 packs 130 HP (96 kW) at 5,500 rpm and 230 Nm (170 lb-ft) at 1,750 rpm and it's mated to a six-speed auto, granting the Citroën C4 facelift with a fuel consumption of 4.8 liters / 100 km. Turbodiesel offerings include a BlueHDi 100 with 100 HP & 254 Nm and a BlueHDi 120 rated at 120 HP & 300 Nm.

@Citroen: why bother?

PSA should put their Golf-competitor aspiration's focus into the 308 and go solely crossover, Qashqai-style, with various iterations of Cactus (budget end) and DS4 (premium player) using Citroen. It's so obvious as to be a no brainer.

Rule no 101 of automotive marketing: never compete first against your own products before then competing against against your actual competitors.

The Divine Concept showed the outline for a really nice hatch, I think something similar will replace the DS4.

I completely agree. Another example of product overlap is the C3, DS3, 208 trio, or the mpv cars like 3008 vs C3 Picasso and 5008 vs C4 Picasso. Still, for a financially troubled company, PSA is producing much interesting and likeable cars than Fiat group, Renault and even dare to say, Ford.

Agreed.

PSA needs to differentiate their brands more than that. One needs to be clearly comfort-oriented and one more-sport oriented. One needs to target Ford and the other VW and its likes.

PSA's products are great value for money, but they have ended up being quite anonymous, nothing exciting anymore, when the market is full of more competitive products.

They had the chance to make the 208 nice to drive, make it as enjoyable as a Fiesta, yet with a better interior. They didn't. The 208 is as soft as a fresh out of the oven cake.

The great characteristics of the once typical french hatch are long gone (Renault holds on, but not as much as I'd want).

Then again, Citroen played the "quirky brand" card with the introduction of the DS sub-brand and the C4 Cactus, but is that enough?

They are not left behind engine-wise, but they don't have any very competitive product in the market, nor have any distinctive character. They are lost, sadly.
