Handsome. From the Chinese characters, I'll venture it's for ASEAN markets.

Is it based on another carmaker's platform, a la Chrysler-based Routan, or is this an all-VW effort?

I am not normally a MPV or van kind of person, but this one is quite good looking, definitely one of the prettiest people movers around.

Surprisingly it is. In Europe it's a shrinking market but it's great to see that the Chinese can buy a car with executive seating without paying through the nose for a GLS or X7.
Indeed.

The Mercedes-Benz R-Klasse performed well in China right up to its demise. There are rumours that an EQ model concept using the same ideas as the R being prepared as a China-Only model.

Note that China and ASEAN are completely different markets. China is LHD whereas ASEAN is RHD with the exception of the Philippines. Therefore China's domestic models cannot automatically be sold in ASEAN unless RHD versions of are made.

Hong Kong and Macau are also RHD, not LHD as in mainland China.

MPV/Van is a dead niche. Nobody (in Europe at least) wants one, and 999 out of 1000 would pick an SUV instead.

They a 2000s niche and definitely died off now pretty much everywhere. SUVs are the now and future, people just can't get enough of them. Maybe the saloon or station wagon could be next on the dying breed to cars.

MPVs will have their renesance with the autonomous drive.

I wouldn't write-off saloons or estates per se. But I believe that the respective genre(s) will be redefined. Traditional 3-Box configurations will be replaced by more rakish slightly notchbacked/fastbacked 4 door (with and without liftbacks) automobiles while estates will gradually become far more similar to shooting brakes. Consumers placing emphasis on passenger accomodations/cargo space can always revert to SUVs' or derivative crossovers, the latter segment especially being positioned for future growth.

The Business MPV market in China is big, and with the Viloran, Volkswagen finally have a Chinese manufactured entrant in this lucrative market.
