X6 Motor Trend - 2009 BMW X6: Perfectly pointless

The BMW X6 is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV by German automaker BMW. The BMW X6 is the originator of the sports activity coupé (SAC), referencing its sloping rear roof design. It combines the attributes of an SUV (high ground clearance, all-wheel drive and all-weather ability, large wheels and tires) with the stance of a coupé (styling featuring a sloping roof).

I grabbed the keys to the BMW X6 last night. By the time I got home I was wondering whether, in a quiet corner of the FIZ, BMW's giant engineering center in Munich, a bunch of engineers were crying into their weissbier over this thing.

Before this guy starts questioning X6's point he should first deal with purpose of his own article.

If he thinks the article has a point he is damn naive (or just having bloody oversized ego).

Stupid people ... :t-banghea

Who pays such people to write such stupid things? :t-crazy2:

You guys are hilarious. Can't see the forrest for the trees. An X6 is pointless on paper, that is all he is saying. On the other hand he is praising the engineering and driving experience, and overall effort.

On paper almost every car is pointless.

Eg. for a 5-member family a 2-seater coupe is pointless, for someone a van is pointless, for other a large luxury sedan is pointless etc.

What really is pointless is a discussion about "having / don't having a point". Just like the debate about styling is - since needs & tastes are different.

And yes - especially in premium segment (not only cars) - "the point" of a certain product goes way beyond functionality. Every child knows that. Yet still some car "journalists" all over the world still have problem with that particular issue. Gosh!

There is one car coming that actually is pointless - name X1

No car is pointless! Especially in premium segment.

In fact - X1 - I'm waiting for such a car. A premium small SAV / crossover with AWD, higher sitting position than wagon & approx. same boot space. In fact X2 - with even sportier shape & perhaps only 3dr instead of 5dr would fit me even better.

Eg. when Nissan Quashqai was launched everybody said the car is "pointless" since it was neither an SUV nor MPV but a strange crossover. But the car is a sales hit right now.

Don't be fooled by the "experts" like most automotive journalists, or most forum / blog visitors. Most of them don't have a clue!

Any "4 door coupe" for that matter...

I have to agree with the article. I'm a hard core BMW enthusiast, but that doesn't mean I'm willing to accept anything that they are willing to throw at me.

To quote the article, the following summarizes exactly how I feel about the X6

"it manages to artfully combine all the disadvantages of a tight-fitting coupe with all the downsides of a big SUV"

But I know for a fact that many people with money will get an X6 in a heartbeat, maybe just because they like the way it looks, and there isn't much I can argue with here. More so, I must hand it down to BMW for being able to identify such a niche clientelle and going after them.

As far as I am concerned, I'm not sold on this BMW.

Yeah the point is the appearance. The same deal with CLS. It doesn't offer anything the E class doesn't, save the coupish looks (which I don't get either - but that is for another thread).

By rights, I happen to agree with the author. Sure, you could say that all cars are pointless, but that just isn't true. There are tons of pointless cars out there.

Seriously, why would anyone buy a less practical X6 with less space for more money than an X5? Even when the extra driving dynamics are taken into account, it all works out absurdly useless on paper. Same goes for the MB CLS.

That being said, I'm contradicting myself because I'd buy one in a second. Why? Because I it looks better than an X5. That's my reasoning.

Sorry guys but X1 is a pointless car. Its not much to argue about, it just is.

LOL, because you say so???

Hehehehe, funny indeed. You will one day realise that X1 is probably less pointless than a 2500 kg truck. But every single car in BMWs lineup is completely and utterly pointless if you say X1 is pointless.
