Throughout the 20th century, the UK’s automotive industry was riddled with specialty manufactures. At a certain point, the British boasted with over 100 specialist brands. Though the little island now prides itself with just 8 major carmakers, only a few of those specialty marques survived the hardships of time.

If you’re not familiar with that name, Morgan was founded in 1910 and it’s a family-owned company even to this day. Based in Malvern Link, Worcestershire and employing just over 160 people, the brand makes under 1,000 vehicles per year and the waiting list for one is 12 months maximum.

Customers have to wait a heck of a long time even for a basic 4/4 or Roadster ‘cos you’ve guessed it - the Morgan Motor Company still builds cars the old-fashioned way. Morgans have always been built around an ash frame and a steel or aluminum chassis.

Even the decidedly retro futuristic Aero Coupe in the photo above has a hand carved wooden frame

This old man’s way of making a vehicle gives Morgan models unique strength and flexibility. Surprisingly, Morgan says research showed that the wooden frame makes its cars safer than conventional steel frames on impact tests. Did you ever wonder just how hard it is to shape a piece of wood into a Morgan frame?

Filmed at the automaker’s Pickersleigh Road assembly complex, the 8-minute clip below condenses a manufacturing process that takes at least 4 weeks. This behind the scenes look at how Morgans are made by the craftsmen and women is truly fascinating for both carving enthusiasts and petrolheads.

From cutting the first intricate pieces of the ash wood for the car's frame through to the final road test and PDI (pre-delivery inspection), this video guides you through the unique production process. Enjoy!

To be revealed on March 3
Morgan has released an additional teaser image of its new model, set for Geneva premiere next week.

The new photo shows the vehicle will feature the traditional lines for the British manufacturer and will be related to Aero Coupe or Aero Supersports models. A previous teaser revealed the sports car will have a familiar front end with round headlights and large radiator grille.

There’s still not much to report as more details are expected within the next few days. The model will be fully revealed on March 3, during the first press day of the Geneva Motor Show.

Morgan's latest teaser reveals Aero 8 name
Will have side exhausts
Morgan has released another teaser for their Geneva-bound model which will be called "Aero 8".

Previous teasers have shown that Morgan's latest two-door model will adopt as expected a retro design with a very long hood and dual side exhausts. This latest image gives us a closer look at the rear quarter design and possibly shows a removable hard top although we are not too sure about that.

Little else is known about the model but most likely it will be closely related to the targa-roofed Aero SuperSports which has a BMW-sourced V8 4.8-liter engine outputting 367 HP (270 kW) and 490 Nm (370 lb-ft) of torque. It runs the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in 4.5 seconds and tops out at 170 mph (273 km/h).

We will know more on Geneva 3 when the Morgan Aero 8 will be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.

Morgan Aero 8 officially unveiled in Geneva
Powered by BMW V8 4.8-liter engine

After a lengthy teaser campaign, Morgan has taken the wraps off the Aero 8 in Geneva.

As you would expect, the fifth generation Aero 8 keeps the classic style appreciated by fans of the legendary British marque but comes with a wide variety of mechanical upgrades. For example, the aluminum chassis now has better torsional stiffness and there's also an all-new suspension together with anti-roll bars and a BMW-sourced limited slip differential. Also part of the package is ABS (with EBD), along with cruise control, power steering and airbags while the revised handling has made the car feel more responsive.

Described as being "the most refined Aero product to date", the new Aero 8 is motivated by the same V8 4.8-liter naturally aspirated BMW engine developing 367 bhp (273 kW) which can be teamed up with either a six-speed manual or an automatic transmission equipped with paddle shifter.

There are also some revisions inside the cabin where the owner will find authentic wood accents, textured box-woven carpets and a fine leather trim. Morgan has added a new AC system, an optional touchscreen infotainment system as well as low-slung carbon seats and customization packages.

Production of the fifth-gen Aero 8 is scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of the year and the car will be available with an optional hardtop. Morgan has announced the Aero SuperSports and Coupe will be phased out in April this year.

I love it. Now is this all they will show because Car and Autocar both said Morgan would show a supercar at Geneva, this ain't a supercar.

Very eccentric car for eccentric people. A music teacher at my highschool had one (waayyy back when I was young :p).

It's nice that cars like this are still being made.

Morgan 4/4 celebrates 80th Anniversary with special edition

As 2016 marks 80 years since the first 4/4 debuted, Morgancelebrates the model's anniversary with a special edition.
On display at the Geneva Motor Show alongside the EV3, the new 4/4 takes lots of cues from the first versions and it is offered in three exterior colors: Morgan BRG, Saxe Blue and Dark Red. Each special edition is fitted with a brass grille, quad bonnet straps, tonneau cover and mohair roof.

A range of leather and box weave carpet color combinations can be selected by prospective buyers for the cabin, which also benefits from new trim details, leather door pull handles, leather door tops and a numbered plaque to remind owners that their rides were produced in just 80 examples.

Just like the standard Morgan 4/4, the special edition is offered in both LHD and RHD variants and it uses a 1.6-liter Ford Sigma engine, producing 110 PS (108 HP) and 131 Nm (97lb-ft) of torque, mated to a 5-speed Mazda gearbox.

The 795 kg (1,753 lbs) weighing car needs 8.0 seconds to reach 62 mph (100 km/h) and it can go up to a top speed of 115 mph (185 km/h), while burning a combined 6.4L/100km (36.75 mpg US) and emitting 143 g/km of CO2. Prices start from £33,330 (equivalent to $46,250), excluding taxes.
