The Mini Coupé and Mini Roadster are two-seater sports cars that were engineered and manufactured by German automaker BMW under the Mini marque between 2011 and 2015.

MINI Considers Its Next Model

We have the MINI, MINI convertible, MINI wagon (Clubman) and soon to be MINI SUV. Since we know BMW is keen to grow the brand we have to ask ourselves, what’s next? Based on what sources are telling us, it could be a bit of a shock.

First lets take a look at the rumors from the past few years. For almost two years we’ve heard various rumors of some sort of Triumph branded roadster only to have them quashed by those in the know. Then there’s the MINI micro-car rumor that sprung recently along with talk of a new MW Issetta. However with European emissions legislation the driving force behind both of those concepts, it’s hard to really tell where they will go.

However we got some very interesting insight recently when speaking to a high level source at MINI about this very question. He mentioned that the roadster idea didn’t have a lot of backers in the company for various reasons. He then went on to leave us with this little nugget of info in the form a question: "What if MINI instead produced a low-slung and sleek small coupe not unlike the ACV 30 concept car from 1997?"

d13f304db9246ae40ddcac6ad6eff031.webp

The ACV 30 (Anniversary Concept Vehicle 30) was originally based off of a concept (designed by the current BMW head of design Adrian Van Hooydonk) proposed as the new MINI in the mid-90s. Once it was out of the running (with Frank Stephenson’s design wining out and going on to become the R50) it was refitted and rolled out as a bit of a stop gap measure to show the public that a new MINI was indeed coming and the brand was still well alive. What it showed was that distinctive futuristic retro interior (similar to what eventually showed up in the R50) mated with a sleek, rally inspired exterior that traded some interior space for looks. Could that same formula work on a production car? Our source seemed to say the idea was at least on the table.

But one particularly noteworthy aspect of the ACV 30 is that it was mid-engined and rear-wheel drive since it was based off of the MGF roadster. While we doubt that that part of the concept would ever transfer to production (due to brand values, space efficiencies and cost), it would make for a very interesting concept.

Another thing to keep in mind - if MINI goes this route we don’t expect the eventual production car to look much like the ACV 30.

As previously confirmed by me & Scott:

It will be a 2-seater. Since the original MINI is a 2+2 "coupe" already.

ACV30 is mentioned in this context only to graphically show how coupeish the new MINI coupe is going to look like, but please DO IGNORE the ACV30 styling. It's just an old concept. And the styling of production version coupe will look nothing like that.

Expect cute yet aggressive look ... Kind a funky Aston Martin ... ;)

The negative comments so far lead to... Two models too far for the MINI Brand (Or 3 if you include some individuals response to the MINI Clubman.)

What (Some) people fail to understand is that these vehicles will include the DNA of MINI -Compact , excellent driving characteristics and image.
Very true of the MINI Clubman which has got off to a flying start.
MINI is not just a brand it is more a lifestyle as seen now with "The Other MINI" because that is what the Clubman is... Still a MINI but another concept of MINI.

We chose to approach MINI from the early beginning as a Lifestyle we @ BMW did not want to go on Rover's approach. So much so that eight years since the brand was launched we can consider MINI to be one of the greatest automotive success stories. Being part of that creativity has earned me amongst others a MINI for life.

MINI incorporates everything that is influential youthfull. A MINI SAV will work because I have seen what they plan to do with it , It will be interesting and I know there will be fear and people will write us off , a small dynamically lowslung Coupe think a MINI-Aston Martin and then you get the concept - a small performance coupe - an allout small sports car.

For now MINI Is the entry brand for the BMW Group although things are on the horizon to move MINI to the 2nd brand of BMW Group.

When Smart brought out the Roadster in 2003 we were concerned
Of how this Small sports car would steal customers from MINI.
Of course we need not have been so worried because they mis-marketed it.
But the concept was interesting. Just as Smart itself is interesting.

Now imagine if the Sub brand of MINI featured City Concepts in the shape of small urban transport in 2 body styles and possibly a very small roadster ?

If Rolls-Royce is seen as in Marketing terms "Ultimate wealth" . BMW as "Modern Architechture". And MINI As "Pop Culture" then (Cough,Cough) will be Sci-Fi-Future.

I really hope the Coupe will be named "Spitfire".

MINI Spitfire :eusa_danc

Btw, my sources say BMW are considering to name the new MINI SAV: "Monty".

MINI Monty. (great allusion to Monty Python :D:D:D)

But I prefer the name "Gulliver" . ;)

MINI Gulliver :D ;)

*******

I really hope Isetta will soon be confirmed to be the 4th brand in BMW Group portfolio.

Isetta. It sounds ... futuristic. :D

Spitfire sounds like a car from Chrysler or some other American brand. The car should have a cute name like Waldo or something. :D

Please tell me those picture are not the actual thing...

Of course it's not. That's a MINI concept from 1997 - done by Adrian van Hooydonk, showcasing BMW / Rover / MINI are serious about reviving the MINI brand. Although the Frenk Stephenson's design was chosen for the production.

Like I said: ACV30 Concpet is pictured in this context to show how sleek & low-slung the MINI coupe will look. But the upcoming coupe's styling & design details has nothing to do with ACV30. Just a general shape: low, wide, and sleek.

Whew! Maybe I should have read better.

Well in that case I cannot wait to see what they have to show.
A fast, light, and stylish coupe from MINI will be something I'll look forward to, hopefully it is priced right as well.

BMW / Rover / MINI are serious about reviving the MINI brand.
I know you have been saying this lately not only in this thread but others, but I just noticed this firsthand. In my hometown the big BMW dealership moved out west and the lot and building were replaced by a sole MINI dealership.

And now imagine BMW not taking over MINI ... because these were Rover's plans with MINI before BMW acquire them:

:pukeface::pukeface::pukeface:

Completely cheap & uninspiring vehicles which would send MINI brand to the hell forever. Thanks God BMW came at the right time. Reviving MINI with a great success.

It's was maybe a shitty design but technical solutions were a way more intersting.

Holy crap.....looks a lot like the Fiat 500 in this pic.

LMAO, what a terrible design by Rover if that's supposed to be a Mini :D

mini aston martin ... yeah :eusa_danc... i had this in mind since i have seen the pics of the R56, i could easily see myself in one of these.
MINI Spitefire JCW
just bring it on

with more and more information getting out of bmws marketing guys, this topic deserves some more attention

The MINI Speedster has been announced internally that the car body will be built by another outside contractor and definitley not Magna who will be producing the MINI Cross-Over. Designed entirely in Munich and based on the existing R57 MINI cabrio Platform the Speedster is entirely cost effective mechanically with extra budget attatched to the design of the small car.
To further it's intentions as a small sports car the MINI Speedster will only be available as Cooper S although a John Cooper Works model will also be available. Engineering changes will include a wider front and rear track - The Speedster has bulging wheel arches , there is a lowered suspension but front wheel drive remains to keep the familar MINI Go-Kart handling.

Surprisingly the car in weight terms is kept low to allow the MINI Speedster to be nimble , dynamic and quick weight is just over a 1000kg

result of some bored evening minutes

The MINI Speedster and the MINI -X SAV reflect different sides to the MINI brand. The MINI-X SAV is a compact little SAV very urban like , it's the kind of car you can take to the city and indeed city based indoor snow slopes. MINI-X begins the first example of a product that will define further family concepts for MINI. The MINI SpaceBox Concept has officially been given approval for a design concept that will further seperate the approach from mainstream choices for vehicles with more passion , flexibility and a great image - which is basically what MINI offers the customer.
A 5dr MINI in the form of an individual concept like the SpaceBox would offer a new stylish insight into a family motivated choice instead of a traditional mainstream MPV or hatch.

The brand will reach it's pinacle with the inclusion of the MINI Speedster.
Originally an idea with the first generation MINI which did not make it to production purely because MINI was yet to establish itself , by then the timing was too late with BMW only investing in a Cabrio and the MINI GP.
Now with the current MINI platform we have seen the Cabrio and Clubman , but we know the highest percentage of cabrio buyers are female so what for the male customer?

Purely based on the Cabrio for reasons of economy of scale the Speedster is lower has unique design features to identify it as a MINI but seperate it from the cabrio and that includes the loss of the rear passenger compartment substituted with built in roll over hoops ajoined to twin butresses on the rear deck. The front screen is shorter and raked back for a typical Speedster appearance , sporty and dynamic. With amplification of the Go-Kart feeling to produce an exciting dynamic small sports car.
A fixed roof Coupe model has been designed and is under consideration.

Engines will be taken from the current MINI which will include the possibility of a JCW Speedster. To define it's "amplification" of MINI there will be very vibrant colour choices such as bright metallics - Orange , The return of a Gold color which reminds me of the E46 M3 Pheonix Yellow , a vibrant metallic Lime Green aswell as interiors to match. Customers who would prefer less exposure can endure themselves to some of the traditional MINI choices.

It's a car that could do well with further integration of the image of MINI to customers who might want something exciting enough that they never previously considered the MINI brand. Especially older customers who might be partial to the Speedster as an interpretation of those classic British Sports cars driving along say- Highway one in California , either during the day or at sunset with the roof open and the occupants exposed to the elements.

It is an interesting choice that defines the MINI brand as a maker of premium small cars that surpass all coventional choices.
Although a concept will be shown at the IAA. Apart from the standard for the show cosmetic finish it will be the finished production model. Sales should begin early 2011.

You might see it sooner as it is going on holiday soon to Copacabana Beach.

MINI

Mini (stylized as MINI) is a British automotive brand founded in 1969, owned by German BMW since 2000, and used by them for a range of small cars assembled in the United Kingdom, Austria, and the Netherlands. The word Mini has been used in car model names since 1959, and in 1969 it became a brand in its own right when the name "Mini" replaced the separate "Austin Mini" and "Morris Mini" car model names.
