S-Class (W220) Mercedes To Recall S-Class W220 In China

The Mercedes-Benz W220 is a range of flagship sedans which, as the fourth generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class, replaced the W140 S-Class after model year 1998 — with long and short wheelbase versions, performance and luxury options; available four-wheel drive; and a range of diesel as well as gas/petrol V6, V8, and V12 engines. Compared to its predecessor, the W220 had somewhat smaller exterior dimensions but offered greater interior volume, particularly in the long-wheelbase versions, and slightly less cargo volume.

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - German luxury car maker DaimlerChrysler A.G. (DCXGn.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) said on Thursday it planned to recall most of its upscale Mercedes Benz S-Class sedans sold in China due to potential problems with the fuel tanks.
Mercedes will recall 23,677 S-Class sedans manufactured from October 1998 to March 2005 and sold in China, a Mercedes spokeswoman said. The recall will affect 95 percent of the upscale models sold in the country.
No accidents or personal injuries have yet been linked to the defect, she added.
DaimlerChrysler does not plan to issue a recall for similar models sold worldwide, as the defect was only found in sedans sold to China, executives said.
The German car maker had sold 15 percent more cars in Northeast Asia last year than in 2004, led by strong gains for its luxury Mercedes brand in China and South Korea.
DaimlerChrysler plans to make Mercedes cars and commercial trucks in China, where it has won approval to offer financing.

no worry, the new S is not arrived to China yet.....

I'm just wondering what makes a "Chinese-spec W220 S-Class" so different from a "X-spec W220 S-Class"? I mean the fuel tank stuff should probably be similar on all W220's right?

As far as I know, the S-Class W220 sold in Asia, was built by a sub-contractor company in Vietnam.

OMG...it seems the W220 was appaling in terms of reliability.
