Mercedes follows Chrysler, chooses Garmin for next-gen infotainment system

Mercedes-Benz has announced Garmin will provide fully integrated navigation for the automaker's future infotainment systems. Over the next four years, buyers will find the familiar and easy-to-use Garmin interface show up in the German manufacturer's new models.

Garmin says the systems will also include a small secondary display for upcoming turn information, and users will also be able to control the navigation system via either the vehicle's rotary control or voice commands. The system will also work with the Mercedes-Benz Advanced Driver Assistance System to provide location services for "challenging situations."

Mercedes-Benz is the second major automaker to adopt Garmin for navigation. Chrysler has successfully employed the tech as part of its UConnect system (seen in the photo above), offering up intuitive navigation with good graphics. In our experience, the Chrysler units are accurate and fairly quick, though we have noted some lag in city environments.

In April Mercedes-Benz will be launching the new Drive Kit Plus for the iPhone in the US market. It was introduced in Europe late last year in the A-Class. This system allows you to connect your iPhone to your Mercedes-Benz for a lot more than just phone calls and music!

I like it since the "Min" guy is a graduate of my Alma Mater. The University of Tennessee.
Dr. Min Kao's $12.5 million dollar donation helped build this lovely Engineering building.

^ Great. Garmin also developed the MB StreetPilot for the A/B/C in Europe. Found a blurb from 2008. :)

StreetPilot III was developed in collaboration with US manufacturer Garmin, one of the leading producers of mobile navigation devices, and a company with a wealth of experience in the fields of outdoor activities and car, motorbike, yacht and off-road transport. StreetPilot III costs 529 euros in Germany (including VAT, plus installation costs), and will be available from May 2008 through Mercedes-Benz affiliates.

The portable navigation system is perfectly suited to new generation A- and B-Class vehicles equipped with the Audio 5 CD radio model. The system can also be used in predecessor A- and B-Class models equipped with the Audio 5 CD and Audio 20 CD radio models, as well with the Audio 20 CD in C-Class models built between 2004 and 2007.
