Mercedes-Benz Tourismo RHD Successor

For many years it has been the clear number one amongst high-deckers: the Mercedes-Benz Tourismo RHD (high-deck touring coach) forms the backbone of coach fleets throughout Europe and beyond. And now its successor is appearing in the rear-view mirror: Mercedes-Benz allows first sight of the new Tourismo RHD. The high-decker has undergone complete redevelopment and is sure to win plaudits not only for its comfort, but especially for its outstanding economy and safety. The new Tourismo RHD will celebrate its first public debut at the BusWorld Kortrijk trade fair in Belgium in October this year.

The tailoring to customers' requirements is the same, but everything else is new: with four models in three lengths, from just under 12 m up to 14 m, the new Tourismo covers the main sizes of coach for the "business segment", as one would expect. With this term, Mercedes-Benz defines the range - so important for bus and coach operators - from the highly-functional shuttle bus to excursion and long-distance regular-service buses, through to high-comfort touring coaches.

The new Tourismo RHD will expand this range even further; and with it, the range of deployment options through a new engine added to the range. It will range from the compact, lightweight Mercedes-Benz OM 936 in-line six-cylinder engine with 7.7 l displacement and 260 kW (354 hp) output, to the particularly powerful new top-of-the-range engine with 335 kW (456 hp) output, based on the well-known OM 470 with 10.7 l displacement. Similarly, the Tourismo adapts to a huge range of different requirements with its two different selectable cockpits and a passenger compartment that can be fitted out to suit individual needs. The design of the new high-decker is also completely new. At first sight, with its unmistakeable front end and the exciting interplay of shape and lines, it is a typical Mercedes-Benz. The familiar link between form and function is clearly in evidence with the new Tourismo RHD.

At the forefront of bus and coach operators' minds will be the outstanding economy demonstrated by the new Tourismo RHD. Thanks to its finely-honed aerodynamics, its wind resistance figures have been reduced to an unsurpassed level of Cd = 0.33. This contributes to the significantly reduced fuel consumption figures, with correspondingly lower emissions. And consumption can be further reduced with new options such as the PPC - Predictive Powertrain Control anticipatory cruise control, available for the first time in a Tourismo. Together with its long maintenance intervals and comprehensive service packages, the Tourismo RHD is proving itself to be the new economic miracle amongst touring coaches.

The safety level for the new Tourismo RHD also sets the benchmarks for its class. The focus is totally on maximum active safety to prevent accidents. In addition to its wide-ranging standard safety equipment, the new Tourismo RHD is also available with the optional Active Brake Assist 3 emergency brake system, one of several firsts for the new model. In addition to potential obstacles moving ahead, ABA 3 also recognises stationary obstacles and will initiate hard braking when necessary. As is typical for Mercedes-Benz models, the new Tourismo RHD thus already more than meets future statutory regulations.

As far as passengers are concerned, first and foremost is the travelling comfort of the new Tourismo RHD. Passengers are made to feel welcome on board by the convenient, ergonomic entry steps and the airy, pleasingly-designed vehicle interior. A further highlight is the new Softline seating: the attractive diamond-shaped pattern on the seat and backrest calls to mind luxury-class Mercedes saloons. The feel-good comfort in the new Tourismo RHD is due in part to the two-zone controls, with fully automatic controls and separate circulation for both heating and climate control. They ensure a constant temperature within the vehicle. With its optimum economy, its safety, functionality and comfort, the new Mercedes-Benz high-decker-touring coach Tourismo RHD will win over bus and coach operators, passengers and drivers alike.

The new Mercedes-Benz Tourismo can be optionally fitted ex-works in any specification with a WLAN router and aerial. The Coach MediaRouter incorporates two slots for LTE-enabled SIM cards and two USB ports. In addition to simply providing an internet connection, this ensures that users can also use their end devices to access media stored locally in the bus while on-the-road. The FleetBoard telematics system is also available ex works with the new Tourismo and provides maximum transparency for a fleet operator about their fleet. The modular FleetBoard services were developed especially for bus-specific fleet management and are available throughout Europe. FleetBoard makes it possible to identify and exploit savings potential in bus and coach fleets.

Mercedes-Benz Tourismo RHD Revealed

The new Mercedes-Benz Tourismo RHD is celebrating its world premiere in Brussels today. After nearly 20 years, the high-decker touring coach (RHD) is a completely new version set to continue the long success story. The preceding model is truly a bestseller, with around 26 000 units sold since its introduction. More than 2000 units were handed over to customers in 2016 alone. This represents a market share of around 20 percent in Europe, making it Europe's most successful touring coach. The prospects for the succeeding model are also more than promising, as the new Tourismo will set standards with respect to fuel efficiency, comfort and safety in the constantly growing touring and inter-city bus market.

With its four model variants and a wide variety of powertrains and equipment, the new Mercedes-Benz Tourismo covers the wide-ranging needs of customers in the entire touring coach segment. Daimler Buses holds a market share of over 40 percent in the constantly growing European long-distance bus services. In Germany, no less than one in two long-distance buses bear the Mercedes-Benz or Setra logo. Like its predecessor the new Tourismo RHD will be manufactured at the Turkish plant in Hoşdere near Istanbul.

The new Tourismo particularly shows its strengths when it comes to fuel efficiency, as a minimised Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is a key buying argument in the bus sector. The new Tourismo RHD meets this criterion, thanks to a fuel consumption level that has been reduced even further: fuel consumption has been decreased by around 4.5 percent, mainly due to optimised aerodynamics and the completely redesigned, lighter body. The saving amounts to as much as seven percent when the consumption advantage of the OM 470 engine generation with efficiency package, which was introduced in summer 2016, is included. With new optional equipment items such as Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC) or Eco Driver Feedback (EDF), fuel consumption and thus emissions can be reduced still further. An extensive standard equipment package and optimised service schedules also contribute to maximum cost-effectiveness for bus operators.

The Mercedes-Benz Tourismo RHD is the safest vehicle in its class. Emergency Brake Assist, Stop Assist for stop-and-go traffic, Attention Assist – just three examples of the wealth of highly developed safety engineering in the new Tourismo. Customers are able to configure the extensive safety features to suit the intended application. The Mercedes-Benz Tourismo RHD also sets new standards in this segment when it comes to passive safety: in the event of an accident despite all safety measures, the unique Front Collision Guard (FCG) will protect the driver and co-driver in the event of a collision.

A touring coach is a capital investment for the operator, and a workplace for its driver. They both have extremely high expectations in terms of functionality. The new Tourismo RHD lives up to these expectations with its modular system. With four models in three different lengths, the high-decker model covers virtually all requirements. For the first time, all models are available with both left and right-hand drive. Operators are also able to choose between two cockpit variants. Both versions are equipped with a multifunction steering wheel and new instrument cluster with a TFT colour screen, but are different in form and function depending on the user. The Comfort Plus cockpit, for instance, is fitted with the Coach Multimedia System. It has clearly laid-out controls for the entire entertainment electronics, the navigation system included as standard and a Bluetooth module for telephone operation.

The new Tourismo RHD welcomes passengers with a convenient entryway and a bright interior. With a range of different patterns for the flooring, numerous fabric options for seat covers, side walls, curtains, the underside of the luggage carrier shelves and the central ceiling panel, operators can configure the new Tourismo RHD individually. A kitchen in the interior design and a new air conditioning system additionally enhance travelling comfort for passengers. Using the optional media router for on-board WIFI, passengers will also be able to access the internet and its websites conveniently.

Mercedes-Benz Tourismo RHD Revealed

The aerodynamics are outstanding for such a high square upright vehicle, a CD of 0.33 is unbelievable and better than many SUV's and amazingly better than the 0.37 of the Rolls Phantom!

The aerodynamics are outstanding for such a high square upright vehicle, a CD of 0.33 is unbelievable and better than many SUV's and amazingly better than the 0.37 of the Rolls Phantom!

Height and size are mathematically factored out of Cd by its very nature. It'll still have huge amounts of drag because its CdA will be much higher than conventional vehicles. I think what's crucial to helping the Cd is the fact that the significant proportion of the frontal area (however big that may be) is smooth as glass and gently contoured. Air can very easily slip across it's surface and out of the way. Proportionally something like a Phantom's front end is much less 'smooth'.

It's also likely that the body of the coach has not been designed to counteract lift in the way a 100mph+ car or SUV might... and counteracting lift means down force, and that means drag, which means a higher Cd.

I could be wrong, I'm not an expert.

I'll take the 6 wheeler looking one... just need to get it decked out like an AMG 6x6 too!

What a beautiful looking coach. Does it have tag axle in front of the rear axle? I could be wrong.
