It's rising. At least that's what Mercedes-Benz is saying: "It represents a vehicle rising gently from a level plane -- as if formed from liquid silver, or like a shimmering cloth draped gently over a new form." Mercedes also says, "The sculpture is highly sensuous -- an exciting eye-catcher."

The sculpture will appear next to E-Class Cabriolet and SLS AMG at the Benz booth during the Detroit auto show this week. The intention is to give an eye into the M-B design process and highlight the creativity of its global design team, according to the press release.

"Mercedes-Benz designers translate their artistic inspiration into the modern Mercedes-Benz design language, which combines excitement with harmony, style with passion," said Gorden Wagener, design chief. "Mercedes-Benz design is clear, calm and coherent, but still emotional and highly sensuous. Mercedes-Benz is the brand best able to present automobile design as an art form in an authentic way."

No matter what they say, primarily, this sculpture hints at the new CLS.

is there a car under there..or is it just a sculpture..
Damn sexxy shape though.. short boot..long hood:D

I am guessing this is the long-awaited CLS. Too bad they are not going to premiere the car at NAIAS.

I am not too fond of Merc's new hard edged & boxy design language, but this one seems to be a much more resolved design. Much easier to the eyes, even the rear wheel arch look better integrated than the newly released E

I love it btw...:usa7uh:

If thats true..then its a mean freakin CLS..
The rear wheel arches seen from above look like superb.. Way wider at the rear..and narrow front:)

freaking hot pity we wont get a car like that from MB in the near futre.Looks superb design love it.

Lovely shape...:usa7uh:

Must be the new CLS...

:t-cheers:

That wont be the CLS mate it doesnt match with any CGI or any off the spy cars.Yes i wish it was The new CLS but it wont be.

Looks so good, but are we going to see an entire concept car or just this strange thing here?. :t-hands::t-hands:

Yes it does; the front and rear look like the spy shots...

Sadly, I'm receiving some rumors that the strange thing will remain a sculpture. No car...

If this is supposed to give an eye into the design process, how can it remain a "sculpture?" Why would MB show a veiled concept?

Sexy presentation. Like some have already said, the photos are quite revealing. Looks very much like the new CLS.

It looks beautiful, but I don't see any CLS in it at all. The next gen CLS looks way different....:t-hands:

The grille, the glasshouse, the line on the side profile... All of them scream CLS. But again, maybe if it was a proper concept we would agree more.

The first concept to be officially unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show is this, a sculpture by Mercedes-Benz that foretells the future of its vehicles – and specifically the CLS.

From the SLS AMG-inspired fascia to the overly blistered fenders clearly inspired by the recent E-Class coupe, the T2-style sculpture features two signature lines that are set to infect the rest of the Mercedes line-up in the near future.

According to officials, this stylistic exercise represents M-B's transition from its traditional wedge shape to a new, edgy art-deco design inspired by the '30s. Aesthetic fripperies aside, this is the future of the CLS, which we expect to see in full concept form later this year.

I would have preferred to see an actual car.

Me too, but this sculpture is intriguing. Love it!!!

Also, from a marketing perspective, very smart.

It would be really nice if they hided a complete car underneath the sculpture. Guess we'll find out in less than an hour, when the official presentation at the Mercedes-Benz area will begin. (11:15 - 11:45 EST)

I wonder how they will get the sculpture on the stage, to reveal it in front of the journalists, as it doesn't have any wheels. Uhhh, by crane?

P.S.:I am too optimistic though...:D

Interesting, but I expected more out of Mercedes. Then again Detroit is too soon to show the S-Class coupe and the new engines I guess. Actual CLS is coming late this year I guess.
