Mercedes-Benz S-Class dominates luxury segment

  • More than 50,000 new S-Class sedans delivered to customers worldwide since market launch in September 2005
  • US and Germany top performing sales markets for the luxury sedan
  • S-Class is also the world market leader among diesel-powered luxury sedans
Stuttgart, Jun 13, 2006
Only eight months after the European premiere of the new S-Class, sales of the sedan have topped 50,000 units. “The new S-Class has been met with great response worldwide, and our flagship vehicle claimed its position as the world’s best-selling luxury sedan immediately following its market launch in September 2005,” says Dr. Klaus Maier, member of the Mercedes Car Group Management Board responsible for Sales and Marketing. “The car’s innovations in particular have been groundbreaking for the automotive industry, and they are the primary reason why the S-Class has maintained a unique status within the luxury segment for decades.” The vehicle’s innovations include several new safety features, such as Brake Assist PLUS with radar sensors, the anticipatory occupant protection system PRE-SAFE with an expanded range of functions, and a night-vision assistant equipped with infrared technology.

The new S-Class got off to a particularly successful start in its home market of Germany. In the first five months of 2006, the number of customers who opted to buy the top-of-the-line Mercedes-Benz model exceeded the combined total of those who purchased the two competing German cars. The new Mercedes-Benz flagship model has been available in the US, its main sales market, since February. S-Class sales have been far stronger there than the figures posted for its German and Asian competitors. Only one month after the market introduction of the Diesel-variants in February, the S Class had regained its internationally leading position in the market for diesel-powered luxury sedans.
The most popular S-Class engine variant is the S 500, which has been the choice of more than 40 percent of all customers since the vehicle was introduced.

Lets hope MBs other new models such as the new C class and E class F/L will be as much as a success as the S class!

I'm particularly looking for the E-Class to retake the lead over the 5-Series here in the U.S. with this facelift. I really hope Mercedes has made the E more reliable since they did address the driving aspect as I also wished. Now if the C can get the same critical acclaim MB will truly have come back, but unless the C-Class outhandles the 3-Series on a track I seriously doubt it will duplicate the praise the S-Class has gotten. The C's segment is an animal of another color and arguably a tougher one considering Mercedes has never led that segment.

Well probably the C klasse will never beat the 3er on sales and driving dynamics.

On the other hand look at the 5er history, it was considered the the leader, but apart from the USA, the E39 failed to take on the E klasse, as far as sales go.

And ofcourse not haveing Taxi companies as customers, like MB, didn't helped either.

Who know, maybe Taxis and ambulances build on a LWB C klasse might give MB the sales edge.:D

No real surprises here ....but expect BMW and Audi to fight back hard with their next top luxury cars.

W0W! my jaws dropped when I read this news, 50,000 cars in 8 months!
If you do the math thats 6,250 sales a month, world wide!!

This is just crushing the compition, If I remember the W220 S-Class in it`s outgoing year still beat out the competition with it`s total sales figures.

No matter what anyone says about the S-Class it is the Master in the excutive luxury car segment. The King is back on the mighty automotive throne and his crown will not be taken away! :t-roses:

I waiting for HOH to come on here and say, I told you so!:D

Oh, including loads of bragging!

lol, BMW_Dude. It's true that MB is going very well the last months. It may be again the king of "affordable" (compared to MM or RollsRoyce) luxury...
