I agree that usually BMW's consume slightly less than MB. Put the way BMW's claim their MPG's and Co2 is just way off the hook, it's in the same league as Toyota Prius. For example claimed 7 l/100km vs. IRL 10,8 l/100km.
My car is 120i with the engine from efficient dynamics programme. If I drive really really economical I can get below 7.0Lit/100km but driving economical is boring. 7.7-8.0 liters/100km is more realistic for my car and my driving style. Its almost as good as my Mum's 118i (which is the old engine with 129hp) so the conclusion is that new BMW engines are more efficient than old BMW engines.
My fathers manual 325i with 218hp drinks 8.3-8.5 liters/100km when he check the fuel consumption. My fathers 325i is not part of efficient dynamics programme and he doesn't have the new 3.0 liters 325i engine but 8.3-8.5 liters/100km is still good for a 218hp engine .
Fuel consumptions are important for our family and we are satisfied with BMW engines, thats why we owned several BMW's for the last 10 years.
