1M Living with the BMW 1M: The Autocar Verdict...

The BMW 1 Series M Coupé (often referred to as the "1M") is the high-performance model of the E82 coupe range, sold under the BMW M performance sub-brand. While BMW naming convention would have called the car the "M1", an alternate name was chosen to avoid confusion with the BMW M1 supercar from the 1970's. Official website: BMW M

Autocar's driving head honcho - mercurial Steve Sutcliffe delivers his verdict on living with the BMW 1M Coupé after around 14,000 miles. Being one of the first long-term tests this warrants a new thread on its own and the video review is worth (more than one) a good look.

Summary
Upsides: Sensational to drive; powerful delivery; superb throttle response; all round feel good factor
Downsides: Fuel economy; electric seat memory loss; everyday ride comfort

Verdict
A proper M Car in every sense of the word.

Thanks M(y)

By now it's a given, the trade-off for:
Sensational to drive; powerful delivery; superb throttle response; all round feel good factor

Equals:
everyday ride comfort

Yesterday I had a ride in a Aston V8 Vantage Roadster, local BEE business man whom I know that parked alongside me at my nearest Supermarket. After giving the pearl black car with the saddle brown seats and it's owner all the compliments that came to mind, he offered me a ride along. Mind blowing! But scuttle shake and firm ride are trade-offs;)

I saw my second 1M yesterday. Contrary to the stealthy black one that was my first, this second encounter was orange. The car is a stunner, almost more so than the E92 M3. Height, width and size are all smack on like the E46. Looks more like a sports car than a grand tourer. It's an instant classic

Hear-hear! (y) That sums up the 1M perfectly.

Got caught up in the daily N1 grind and next to me was a white 1M Coupé. Needless to say that it looked fantastic. Almost more presence than an M3 coupé, dare I say? At present speculators are asking ridiculous "demand-based" premiums over the new list price. We're talking 30-35% premiums over the new car list price! So, here's hoping that a few seldomly driven models make it back on to the used car lots after the hype has died down at more reasonable (and less risky!) prices. Because I seriously want one.

Who enjoyed Sutters' video review?

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
