It would be hard to argue that there aren’t a seemingly endless amount of captivating rumors circulating around WEC and Le Mans style racing. Weeks ago the stories of either Audi’s or Porsche’s withdrawal to mount an F1 bid began to take form, while Porsche has also confirmed it’ll add a third LMP1 to its team of redesigned 919 hybrids next year. Audi too is considering a new car for next year if you believe what you read. And then, there’s Lamborghini.
According to reports stemming from CAR Magazine, Lamborghini’s motorsport coordinator and lead development driver Giorgio Sanna has stated, “I not only want to participate in Le Mans, I want to win/ Our racing program and budget currently extends to 2018. F1 is completely out of our mind because VW is not interested. But endurance racing is a very good program, and we have to look at LMP1. But we have to grow step by step.”
So, could this mean yet another Volkswagen Group brand in the top tier of sportscar racing? Maybe.
So what do we think?
It sounds like Sanna is talking several years from now, and that could fill a gap following the departure of either one of the teams there now and fielded by Porsche or Audi. Currently too, neither Audi nor Porsche share practically anything between the two programs. It seems doubtful that Lamborghini could afford an effort on the scale of either Porsche or Audi, yet perhaps using a Volkswagen Group engine in an independent chassis or even in some sort of modified non-hybrid version of a Porsche or Audi chassis might be possible. The Volkswagen Group has done a similar “lower dollar” effort with Bentley years ago, and utilizing existing tech from Audi or Porsche could see a similar effort for a company that operates on a lower budget. Time will tell.
