Actually that's because of the modifications for this year, where they added the fishy design flaws.

On defections BMW was tied with Toyota for 3rd place, and MB and Audi also scored well.

MB/BMW were downrated due to things like IDrive/Command.

No you missed the point, which was that if MB can score this high in appeal their reliablity either isn't as bad as some say or that it doesn't matter when buyers look at the other attributes of their cars.

I know who scored where and why.

BTW, Mercedes didn't score "well" in defects. They scored below average in defects mainly because of the R-Class not doing well in reliability. The article on how the R-Class pulled Mercedes down:

Design Quirks Erode '06 Quality Ratings

WHEN J. D. Power & Associates announced the results of its 2006 study of new-car initial quality on Wednesday, there were surprises at both the top and the bottom of the list.

Porsche, near the low end of the standings in 2005 — below Kia and barely above Land Rover, a perennial poor finisher — leapfrogged to No. 1.

On the other hand, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, both prestigious German brands that earned high ratings in earlier studies, fell well below the industry average in the study that Power, the market research company, has conducted for 20 years.

While Power's research includes surveys of customer satisfaction and long-term reliability, the Initial Quality Study tallies the number of problems customers experience in the first 90 days of ownership. The ratings were based on responses to a 217-item questionnaire from more than 63,000 people who bought or leased new vehicles.

As in previous studies, changes in the standings sometimes reflect troubled introductions of new models, said Joseph W. Ivers, executive director for quality and customer satisfaction research. For instance, the Mercedes-Benz R-Class, with 190 problems per 100 vehicles, helped drag the nameplate down 20 places from its fifth-place ranking last year (when it tied with Cadillac at 104 problems).


BMW and Mercedes didn't "add" some design flaws either, JDP changed the criteria of the survey this year and when you start asking people whether or not it is easy to use the navigation system in a BMW or Mercedes you're going to get some negative responses. Both BMW and Mercedes were in the top five in the IQS last year with the same exact models so there was nothing "added". BMW got pulled down due to idrive as you stated, but MB got pulled down due to Comand and a unreliable R-Class.

All of that is in direct contrast to this APPEAL survey though which was my point, people still love these cars obviously.

I personally think JDP should have broken the IQS survey up into two different surveys because the combined results are very misleading. If a person doesn't take the time to read the basics on a car or doesn't understand something they'll call it a "design defect" from here on out, that is kinda stupid IMO. MB, Audi, and especially BMW are going to get hammered to death on this. Now when the 07 survey comes out the new S-Class will be included and MB might do much better or they might do worse depending on who gets the survey.
