I would be interested in seeing how many would like to increase the image size allowed for the photo competition. The current size is limited to 800x600. My proposed image size would limit the maximum to 1200x800. I think the larger size presents the images in a more showable format and allows more detail to be seen.

I realize this may cause problems with some who do not have the capability to display this size and also to those who do not have hi-speed cable for viewing the larger images. But lets see what the majority would prefer.

Thanks

I think increasing the image size to 1200x800 wouldn't be a bad idea at all, it will as you said increase the details seen by eye.

Another thing that might be a good idea to upload the images to Imageshack (thumbnail style) so that loading the thread won't be a pain for our members with low speed internet.

On an camera related note, i'll be entering the next photo comps and the picture i'll be entering is 2816x2112, is there any way of resizing these pictures lower without making them blurry and unclear? When i try it they turn from good into horrible:t-banghea

If you have a graphic program you should be able to reduce the image to a variety of sizes. In PS or Elements it is under Adjustments> Image. Do your sharpening after reduction and before saving the new size.

As far as uploading to Imageshack, many do not have accounts and also it makes it a little difficult to do a comparison for voting.

I've got an Adobe Photoshop on my computer, haven't really used it, but i'll give it try :usa7uh: Thanks for the advice NevadaJack

Very good point, forgot about that :eusa_doh:

hmm the problem with it is like you said, the size might be too big for some people and make the screen hard to load , also 1200x800 is a different ratio than 800x600 isn't it, seems a bit wider(which I like), what about 1060x800 0r 1200x900?

I don't like the thumbnail idea simply because I like being able to see all the pictures on one screen and it makes the voting thread easier.

Honestly as much as I would love to have bigger photos in the competition due to the size of most of my photos in my library, I think 800x600 is still more sensible and streamlined.

There are many points to consider here. I feel that many pics (scenery/landscape pics in particular) lose a lot of their impressiveness when resized, and I'd love the possibility to be able to view the pics full-screen (I'm using 1280x1024 resolution), but a size that big would make the thread itself difficult to view smoothly - something that is important for deciding between the pics. For me, something 1024x768 would be best, but I'm sure those who have a smaller monitor (and lower resolution) would not agree.

Well lets keep discussing this over the week, but for now, this weeks competition will remain as usual at 800x600.

Sounds good to me :usa7uh: I'm entering both the automotive and general comp this week.. yahoo for me :D

Not only would the page take longer to load, not everyone has a camera capable of taking photos in that format, giving even greater advantage to those with an expensive camera. With the 800x600 rule you can still be competetive with a standard point and shot, as long as you have the eye make a good shot.

I don't like the thumbnail idea but you don't have to be a member to Imageshack to upload images;)

To be honest, I'm quite undecided on this matter so far. Bigger pictures is very nice but the competing picture's sizes would be quite different also making it harder to compare. I need to think a bit more about this. If it goes bad, we can always change back:usa7uh:

Well based on the results so far it looks like the current 800x600 is preferred. Just a suggestion...the 1024x768 might be a good compromise somewhere down the line. However, for now just lets stay with the original guidelines Zonda set up for us.

You know, I keep on thinking about this and I want to push to have the increase in size. Let's talk about this again if not, I guess I will open a new thread.

I think that having the bigger size is better because you can show more of the picture.

I have a 17th inch, and I would have no problem seeing the bigger size.

I too would love to have bigger sizes but I have to agree with what Zonda said earlier that it is kind of unfair to people who don't have high mp and high tech cameras.

What is the lowest MP that someone has here? I really don't think, based on what I have seen from 4mp and up, that the size difference would distort anything. That is just simply not true.

3Mbps download, 256k upload here! :t-banghea If compared to you 10Mbps guys that sucks! But for me is enough, although the upload could be better of course...

1024? I'm for those...

Nikon still has a DSLR that is 4mp and it performs great! I don't see why some of you can't upload at 1024X768

I would like that size be the official size.

Man, someone has to beat me with a bat today! What in thw wolrd is wrong with me???:t-banghea:t-banghea:t-crazy2::t-crazy2::t-hands::t-hands::confused::eusa_doh:

You asked about Mega Pixels, right, Mike?

I've told you i'm for that, but in your previous post you've said about MP (Mega Pixels) and i thought you talk about Mbps (Internet Speed)...:t-banghea:t-crazy2::D

I don't know what is going on, but I will start from fresh.

I think it may have been you or someone else that mentioned that they did not want to up the sizing because of MP. Well, I don't know who that is, and who would suffer, but I was giving the example of Nikon D2H or D2Hs which is a DSLR that is a 4.1 mp camera. The thing has superb quality. Now I know comparing this to a P&S may not be fair, but in reality uping the size to what I have requested is not to much to ask I am not asking for a huge increase. 1024X768 is what I am asking for.
