hi,
I am going to the IAA this year. But i want to go on the day with the least amount of people there.
are trade visistor days a lot more quiet than normal public days? week days or weekends? i could pay the extra for trade days if it means less people

It's going to be crowded either way. My advice: go early on a working day. Weekend obviously a big nono!

Otherwise just stand on front of the entrance and shout "YOU SHALL NOT PASS" in true Gandalf style.

lol okay. but i want to know if trade days are different from normal days in terms of people.
maybe someone who has been to both days. knows?

My experience is that, since 2001 at least, the trade days have become even MORE crowded than most regular ones. I guess some people wanna feel VIP and therefore choose the trade days option. Another problem is that politicians and similar kinds of officials mostly visit on those days which sometimes leads to increased security measures or even lock-downs. Therefore, I think it's wise to follow @klier's advice (weekdays, first weekend better than second one). After-work-ticket makes sense as well. Best choice, of course, are the press days. That is, when design directors etc. are on site and are happy to be talked to.

From my experience, no. The trade days are extremely busy, just like the other days, except you pay a lot of money for your trade day ticket.

This year I am going on a week day rather than a trade day, which two years ago was absolutely ridiculous.

does a time of day matter aswell?

If not able to attend Press Day. The opening days are a nightmare to begin with as the crowds are beyond capacity.
Usually the first week if you go early allows you to see something before the crowds increase en masse.
However there will be additional security measures on entrance and joining the Polizei this year will be the military for additional measures which you already know why...

My last IAA visit was in 2003 on an "open to the public" weekday. Immensely crowded. It took what appeared to be ages until I could finally catch a glimpse of the then-new A-M DB9 and Maserati Quattroporte at their respective brand displays.
