Golf How is your Golf V going in Australia?

Hi all,
I got my VW Golf V TDI 2.0 Ltr in August last year and have done 30,000Km so far and have been very pleased with it. Fuel consumption averages somewhere around 4.8Ltr/100Km with 70% cruising and 30% City.

I would love to hear from others how their Golf V is performing.

4.8L/100km is really fantastic. How I wish we can get diesels here.

I don't have a Golf V, but I've test-driven the GTI & the R32. Both excellent picks.

Mum drives an '05 2.0FSI Comfortline pretty much fully specced (leather, sunroof, nav, etc) and it's been basically flawless for her; I don't really drive it much but when I do it certainly does the job I believe it has been intended to do - to provide a solid, comfortable and an all-round easy driving experience. To be honest I prefer driving my car ('97 Peugeot 306 XSi) - while it's older the focus is much more on handling and driving enjoyment rather than the luxury and usability in the Golf - specs are pretty similar, both sporting a ~100kw 2.0l 4 cylinder - the Golf is just bigger, more spacious, more luxury oriented number (lighter steering, auto gearbox, tinnier-sounding engine etc) than the pug.

Not sure on the fuel economy of the Golf but I think it's about 9l/100km. You sure've done a hellovalotta k's in under a year!! Fuel economy on that diesel is awesome... certainly would've been my choice between the FSI and TDI. Dad's main concern for Mum when considering the diesel was the state of the bowsers - typically very dirty and oily which Dad didn't think Mum would appreciate - is this still the case?

Heh, JandG, I remember you guys! How's the caravanning going, if I remember correctly?

Anyhow, a friend now has a Golf V 2.0 FSI, Comfortline. It's not a bad car. The salesman was a little.. difficult, and unreliable (it was at Barloworld Airport aka. Botany; the service wasn't that great, but I hope it's confined to him and not rife at that dealership), but the car came out ok in the end. No options but metallic paint (grey) and the now-optional ESP, which I suppose you guys couldn't and didn't get.

I can't tell too much at the moment, not being the driver, and seeing as it hasn't done a lot of mileage. However, from perhaps 95%+ city driving, I think the fuel economy is nowhere near as good as yours. It would possibly be approaching double, or maybe 8L/100km if you're being more optimistic.

However, that's really a small issue. I just hope that there will be none of the VW problems as hinted in the media.

Hope to one day in the future. Yes, I have also read a few problems with the Golf but have not experienced anything myself so far. Been the best car I have ever had. Still puts a smile on my face when driving it. Late last year I drove from Sydney to Brisbane in one hit with no filling up of the tank. Once in Brisbane I filled up and it seemed I had about 4 ltrs left. (Filled up with 51 litres. Not bad I reckon considering it was hot and had the aircon on most of the time and two people in the car as well.

Also liked it when we got a free update for the SatNav DVD. Now using version 12.
