Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond is in pole position to become the lead commentator when the BBC takes over the broadcasting of F1 races next season.

With the BBC announcing they've bought the rights to F1 from Bernie Ecclestone after ITV's withdrawal, the race is now on to see who will take over from James Allen and Martin Brundle as the UK's new commentators.

And according to the Times, Hammond, who survived a high-speed crash while trying to break the British land speed record for Top Gear two years ago, is the most likely candidate for the job.

The newspaper also reported that the BBC are planning on letting the 'Hamster', as Hammond is known, along with Jeremy Clarkson and James May, loose at grand prix weekends in an attempt to extend the audience beyond "petrolheads

Personally I think the current ITV team, espically Martin Brundle is doing a good job as commentators. Hammond might be ok at it, but I don't think Clarkson and especially May will give the kind of professional commentating given by Martin Brundle.

Martin Brundle is The King of F1 commentators.

:t-cheers:
I agree, if BBC is serious about their F1 broadcast, hire Martin Brundle asap. As much as I love the Top Gear guys, they are just not F1 commentator material.

I agree. As much as I love the Top Gear team I know that they won't do the best job in the world as F1 commentators, Clarksson and May are highly unsuitable candidates.

LOL Clarkson would probably be talking about his aunt's osteoporosis or something else as important 90 % of the time.

They should do both, hire the current guys to do the live race.
Hire topgear to do the replays, would be interesting to watch, at least one or two races:eusa_thin

Although it would be funny if the TG team were there, I don't think people who are actually interested in F1 would be too happy!

I think they should keep the current ITV people!

Someone in England should send a memo to Hammond and James May to get a haircut. Their hair just keeps getting longer and longer and longer and longer...

The problem with brundle is that he is now persona non grata in the paddock.
