M1 Got a Spare $250,000? 1980 BMW M1 with 27,000 Miles on the Odo

The BMW M1 (model code E26) is a mid-engined sports car produced by German automotive manufacturer BMW from 1978 until 1981. In the late 1970s, Italian automobile manufacturer Lamborghini entered into an agreement with BMW to build a production racing car in sufficient quantity for homologation, but conflicts arose that prompted BMW to produce the car themselves. The resulting car was sold to the public, from 1978 until 1981, as the BMW M1. It was the first mid-engine BMW automobile to be mass-produced; the second was the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car. We came across what is quite possibly, one of the rarest and most sought after production BMWs, the iconic M1 mid-engined sports coupe of which only 451 examples were built between 1978 and 1981. This particular M1 is a 1980 model with only 26,999 miles on the odometer and it's offered for sale for $250,000 by a dealer located in Scotts Valley, California.

The first and only mid-engined production BMW to date, was developed in partnership with Lamborghini and styled by the legendary Giorgetto Guigiaro. It was powered by a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter straight-six delivering 277-horspower hooked up to a five-speed manual gearbox, and it could reach a top speed of 260 km/h or 162 mph.

When it went on sale in Germany in 1978, the BMW M1 was priced at around 100,000 DM (approx. US$45,000).

In April 2008, BMW celebrated the M1's 30th anniversary by introducing the supercar's modern-day successor with the Homage Concept. Unfortunately, the Bavarian company has no plans to build a production version of the concept.

One of my all-time favourites! :icondrool

I got to see a couple of them run in a vintage race that supported the ChampCar race in Toronto, about 4 or 5 years ago. Incredible!

BMW M

BMW M GmbH, formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH, is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures high-performance luxury cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which was very successful in the 1960s and 1970s. As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at the Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany.
