Like the recently redesigned Forester and Outback, the Impreza XV unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show this week gives us yet another Subaru that looks more SUV-like than its predecessor. Subaru pulled this trick off by giving the XV a heftier-looking grille, beefier wheel arches, thicker, more purposeful-looking roof rails and a new, boomerang-look rear spoiler. You'll also notice the little bumperettes up front flanking the new grille.

Don't like the way it looks? Don't worry, as the Impreza XV will not be headed our (U.S.) way. However, you're going to have to learn to live with it should you live in Europe. That won't be too hard to do as the XV ships with your choice of either a peppy 2.0-liter boxer gas engine or torquey turbo-diesle boxer mill, the latter motivator being the power plant that best compliments the new XV's so-so trucky looks.

Question, does black plastic cladding along the bottom periphery of a vehicle give it off road capabilities?

Heck, Martin thinks his regular Impreza is ugly, he's gonna shake his head over this cheap variation.

I guess they've got to try and produce some more variants off the Impreza line, and this sort of vehicle definitely fits in with their brand image...but it doesn't really work. If you're thinking of buying this, just get the Forester instead.

Is BMW planning a lawsuit against Subaru for using 'XV' since some might inteperet the 'V' as the number 5 ? :D

I saw it two days ago and was:

a) too pissed off
b) too embarrassed

to post it on this forum.

What lessons did Subaru not learn from the abysmally pointless Rover Streetwise? If you're looking for a cool crossover vehicle a la VW CrossPolo then you'd better be sure that the car underneath is comensurately cool to begin with. The Impreza - bless her little rubber boots - is not a cool car. It lacks exterior finishing and detailing that makes cars like the Golf and A3 so much more convincing to look at.

How'd I know - well, duh..?

On top of the poor decision to milk the hatch design and bring about something it's not meant to be (an Impreza Outback) they also went and did the amazing thing of slapping on the ugliest grill humanly possible on what is, before that, a fairly nice to look at and distinctive frontal aspect. They could not have put on an uglier grill if they tried...

Four Subarus later and countless hours in my lifetime of loyalty and appreciation. Still, we persevere...

Martin, sorry bro! ...I felt the same way when the Mini Countryman was launched:t-banghea

Not to mention those cannon sized front fog lights.

Subaru has given the Impreza the off road treatment in each generation, perhaps there is a market for it, even in these times when a lot of people are going for those mini SUV.

I have a little question: What does the XV better that the normal Impreza doen't?
