I think they are talking about the passenger airbag, not the driver airbag.

It's about them securing the patent:

• Patent specification of 1971 for an “impact protection device for the occupants of a motor vehicle”
• The first versions of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class with driver airbags were delivered at the end of 1980
• The seat belt tensioner was introduced at the same time as the airbag
• 2021: Mercedes-Benz and Heron Preston present a fashion collection made of recycled airbags
