I’ve just done something I have never done before. Which is? Perform repeated powerslides in a production Audi saloon, then more of them in the Avant estate version of the same car.

Shortly before achieving this feat, I learned that this new Audi S4 accelerates faster than its predecessor despite having a little less power (328bhp against 339) and producing a massive 94g/km less CO2 (now a tax-advantageous 225g/km). It will also be slightly cheaper.

Sounds like a miracle to me. Welcome to the new world of intelligent downsizing, of something for nothing. The previous S4 had a 4.2-litre V8 engine as well as the expected quattro transmission, and seldom has such a promising-sounding combination proved such a dull, disengaging drive. Having driven it really fast, you’d get out of the previous S4 and just shrug your shoulders.

That's what I call a hella-good-article. They seem to love the car!

That is hot looking wagon:D

I find it actually the most boring looking S4 Avant ever. Just to compare the predators were so much more "mean"!

The new S4 must be the most boring looking S-model from Audi...ever!

6I might agree with u about the front but the rear is definitely the hottest of'em all IMO:D

Tumbo, you'll be delighted to know that the reporter was John Simister - one of EVO's most experienced and critical journalists. So the initial review is exceptional. I suspect that the new S4 will carve out further appreciation with the journos and it will become one of the stars of 2009. I can't wait to drive one.

Oh, and as far as Avant's go... this new one is the hottest by far due to its sleeker, lower proportions, shorter front overhang and stockier, wider stance.

Yeah, the front is soooo boring. Disaster. About the rear? Well, there is something I don't like about the new A4/S4 Avant. Something with the roof. The A6 Avant looks much better.
And to tell you the truth, i think that the B6 Avant was the best looking A4 Avant from the rear, closely followed by the B7 and B5!

Yeah, it is still one of my absolute dreamcars! Its freaking fast!:bowdown: And sooo beautiful.

Its a very handsome masculine cars, and as you said yes it's bloody fast even to todays standards:bowdown:

I love them:cool:

Some interesting things I've just learnt - I'm bored with looking at arses ;)

This is the first performance Audi in an age that features a shortened stroke from the long-serving, small bore / long stroke (undersquare) engine block. The new stroke (it doesn't sound like much but it is signficant) is now at 89mm vs. the customary 92.8mm. The bore at 84.5mm remains the same so the engine is less undersquare than before.

SFW you say? Well 3mm can make a big difference in internal piston velocities, the lower the piston velocity - typically, the lower the stress on reciprocating internals' components at high rpm. It's an interesting development and someone here should've brought it to my attention earlier! J/k... :)

Also, fancy that Avant eh? Coz, we all know that sporty, fast Audis wagons are so much sexier than the sedans right? [Blame the original RS2 for setting the precedent...] Well, surprisingly, the new B8 sedan has a far lower drag co-efficient at 0.282 than the sexier Avant at 0.325. Just goes to show what a big fat empty air space behind a wagon does for aerodynamic efficiency!

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
