The idea was as simple as it was brilliant. Grab one of the purest M cars BMW ever made, a 2003 M3 CSL, and throw it head to head with its newest descendent, the turbocharged M4.

On paper, it’s a walkover for the M4. The modern car is safer, more comfortable and light-years ahead for speed thanks to its 317kW/550Nm twin-turbo straight six. But numbers aren’t everything.

The M3 CSL has sweetness, playfulness and predictability the M4 just can’t replicate. And then there’s the noise it makes. The M4 can only dream of such raspy, high-pitched goodness.

*trying to get that mechanical injection to work, not (again) flaming dad's beard in the doing...*

Amazing what people count as analogue these days.
For an old fart like me, the CSL is hardly analogue.

I was born in '93 (22) and the CSL is hardly analogue to me. But compared to the M4? It's like comparing a *scientific calculator with an iPhone. Or at least an iPhone 1st gen with an iPhone 6. Make it a 6 plus :D

*A sexy, delicious, silver calculator

It's a Nokia Communicator at best (CSL). Hardly an iPhone. Like a halfway point between analogue and digital.

Can you still make the poll public @Just_me? I'd like to see who voted for what.

A Nokia communicator haha, so true. I just don't wanted anyone getting ofended by me calling it a calculator, but it was a compliment.

I also was about to ask for the poll to be public

CSL would be a perfect 10 if it was available with a manual gearbox. I've never driven CSL, only been a passenger but its a fantastic car. But M4 is better daily commuter and a better allrounder than CSL. If you can only have one car then M4 is the better choice.

Sorry I can't change the poll.

I've had the privilege of driving the M3 CSL. People talk of the word visceral and it doesn't get more visceral than that. I expect that an LFA would be similarly visceral or a 997.2 GT3 RS.

I should've bought that car with a friend and garaged it in his big six bay.

M3 CSL.

Even if it was a run of the mill E46 M3 vs. F82 M4, I'd still choose the E46. I love everything about that car...the looks, the engine, everything. At the place I used to work at, one of the principal investigators drove in his Imola Red M3, and each time I would pass by, I'd stare an extra second or two. It looked aggressive but not over the top or exaggerated. And since this is the CSL, without a shadow of a doubt, I'd still go for the CSL.

Even if you could only choose one of them to drive for the rest of your life?
