DAKAR 2022

I got all excited when I saw an X5 listed on Dakar's website.

Turns out it's a typo and it's just one of X-Raids old X3CC's...

Running 5th overall at the moment which isn't bad for such an old package, currently beating the full wroks X-Raid MINI's :D

Anywho...

Impressive performance by Al-Attiyah yet again. Unfortunate for Audi so far, with big names like Peterhansel and Sainz so far down the order. Out of the last 17 Dakar's Al-Aittiyah, Sainz and Peterhansel have won 14. Be interesting to see if Loeb can chip away at that 38 min deficit to P1.

What a disaster this race is for AUDI. Badly and hastly designed car turns into nightmare for their marketing. They are currently only trying to limit the damages. One car is running after the other only to be used as a spare parts donor, before the service truck arrives. Another badly managed endevour by AUDI.

It was always going to be an ambitious effort. Fair play to them for trying, and I hope they're back next year. I like the technical idea of bringing the DTM engine and Formula E bit's together in a Rally Raid vehicle.

Having said that, I'm uneasy about the affiliation between the Quandt's and Audi as factory team. If X-Raid (and Q-Motorsport by extension) are to diverge from MINI, I'd much rather see them partner with the BMW brand than Audi Sport.

Exactly this makes it so heavy and the suspension can not cope with the weight.

I don't know how much the RSQ weighs, but the minimum weight for the class is 2 tonnes, which is the same as Al-Attiyah's GR DKR Hilux. You'd have to assume they'd make base weight with the RSQ if it was in T1.1, which would be 1850kg, or 1580kg if they ran it as 2WD in T1.2. The battery reportedly weights 340kg, I don't know what the 3 motors weigh, but there's likely a weight advantage in the DTM engine against Al-Attiyah's TT V6 production derived engine of about 80-100kgs... so, it seems likely the RSQ weighs maybe as much as 2.1 to 2.2 tonnes...

... there's no excuse though, heavier cars are permitted in the T1 class so there's no excuse for not making the suspension stronger.

Also, Peterhansel hit a rock at speed, he won't be the first or last Dakar contender to rip his suspension off irrespective of the weight.

They destroyed the suspension three times due to broken shock absorbers. The AUDI is said to be 200 kg heavier than the Toyota, despide having a battery of only 50 kWh.

Man, the Dakar is such a beautiful event... they've upped their game on the highlight videos for sure.

Much respect to the Kamaz Komrades too!

Sorry for the pic dump, but as ever, the Dakar produces some simply stunning photography.

Pics from the Empty Quarter are often awe-inspiring.

EDIT: Apparently, rally organizers cancelled the Empty Quarter portion of the race, so those pics aren't from there?

Honestly, no idea. It's just stunning though. Photographing the Dakar is bucket list stuff for me.. but I can't lie... South America appeals more than the Middle East. It's all ****ing stunning though. Much respect to all the competitors and people involved.
