D DAY FOR BUTTON AND MAGNUSSEN AS WHITE SMOKE RISES FROM MCLAREN

Tomorrow morning at McLaren headquarters the team will announce its driver line up for 2015, with plenty of speculation on both sides; either Jenson Button or Kevin Magnussen will get the nod, but which one?

The background to this story is long and drawn out; it revolves around Ron Dennis’ return to the helm at McLaren, replacing Martin Whitmarsh, a year ago.

The deal was that Dennis was to find investment to buy out other shareholders and secure a title sponsor by the end of the season; but having failed to do that in time, he extended the deadline into January.

The team focussed on securing the signature of Fernando Alonso, once it was clear that he and Ferrari were separating and from there the decision on whether to partner him with Button or Magnussen has been tied up with the shareholders’ dispute.

Dennis believed that his best chance of securing the finance was Magnussen’s Danish backers, while the other shareholders feel that the team’s best interests – and those of the sponsors – are best served by retaining Button, who is very popular with McLaren’s sponsors and is a world champion. He also has strong ties with Honda, having raced for them in the late 2000s.

The sudden notification of tomorrow’s driver announcement either indicates that the Danish money has come through, in which case it is Magnussen. Or that it hasn’t and the other shareholders will get Button.

No-one connected with either side is willing to make any comment ahead of tomorrow’s announcement. Danish media have been invited to attend the press conference, but that does not rule out the possibility that Magnussen will be announced as reserve driver for 2015. Button, 35 next month, is unlikely to go on for ever, after all.

The drawn out saga regarding Button and Magnussen has served to distract attention away from the Alonso aspect of this story. It is a hugely significant development for Alonso to return to the team with which he fell out so spectacularly in 2007. Both of their fortunes are saddled to each other and to Honda now.

Alonso’s arrival is believed to bring with it interest from Spanish sponsors, with telecoms giant Movistar close to a deal. The brand is linked with O2 in the UK, a rival of McLaren’s former sponsors Vodafone, which is believed to be regretting its decision to get out of F1, now that content is so clearly becoming the key to competitiveness in the future of mobile telephony.

Alonso must be face-palming himself for joining Mclaren at a time when they are going through a big transition. Although has reiterated many times that he's in it for the long run, he surely can't be happy about starting the season on the back-foot.

With Mercedes looking increasingly dominant, they will likely lock down both titles for the coming two years. This casts a very dark shadow over Alonso's ambitions to become a triple world champion. I think Honda will be forced to supply to a second team next year, or else their engine development will be hugely milage limited due to their reliance on just two cars.

I am sure he knew the start would be difficult. But anyway what choice did he have?

True. Mclaren was the obvious choice and the biggest gamble. Although the season hasn't started Alonso could find it even difficult to finish 5th like he's done at many races the previous season.

Anyone keeping an eye on that unfolding saga of Alonso's crash? Also looking at the pre season testing, it seems like Alonso left Ferrari at the wrong time, just as he left Mclaren for the 1st time.

Apparently the rumor going around at fchat and other places is that Alonso was electrocuted or he had a seizure.

Yeah the conspiracies around the accident are continuing. It's a PR disaster for Mclaren who is already struggling to find a title sponsor.

I can't say I'm very excited about the season opening next week. Merc are set to dominate and Williams to follow in tow. I'm hoping for a good tussle between Red Bull and Ferrari.

What is going on with Mclaren's press office? First we have that extremely prolonged driver selection and then this mess? Not to mention Ron Dennis' arrogant attitude towards finding a title sponsor.

Even their car launch was a disaster. They teased with countless of photos of Senna and orange cars but yet the livery of the car was anything but dull. No wonder Hugo Boss left them for Mercedes.

Oh yes that was an enormous stuff up too. Also why is the Honda logo and the badge on the nose cone in black instead of red? I thought it is logical for Honda to emphasis their new partnership?

This is an absolute disgrace from Mclaren, absolutely appalling way to handle Alonso's accident. They have finally confirmed that Alonso was indeed unconscious after the accident and he suffered memory loss. If memory loss is "Normal" why didn't they say it in the initial media statement? Why did they try to hide the details of his condition and the cause of the accident? There was so much spin and bs from Mclaren after the accident, it is just shocking.

McLaren: Alonso memory loss normal

McLaren have confirmed that Fernando Alonso did suffer a "loss of temporary memory" in the wake of his Barcelona testing shunt.

The double World Champion hit the wall at Turn 3 on the final day of the penultimate test.

He was taken to the track's medical centre before being airlifted to hospital where he spent three nights.

Information about the Spaniard's crash has been scares leading to conjecture and speculation.

However, a report in Spain's El Pais that he woke in 1995 have been confirmed by McLaren.

According to the newspaper, Alonso told doctors: "I'm Fernando, I'm in karts and want to become Formula 1 driver."

But McLaren racing director Eric Boullier says that is normal.

He told Sky Sports F1: "It was just a normal concussion [with] a loss of temporary memory.

"It's not as dramatic as you read in the media. Everything is back to normal."

Alonso, meanwhile, has made light of the situation.

He took to Twitter to ask his 2.2million followers 'where did you wake up today'.

"In a few days the championship starts and we ran out "imagination"," he tweeted. "I propose a game with RT to the most creative. [HASHTAG]#whereDidYouWakeUpToday[/HASHTAG]"
