Its odd because normally I'd say Porsche but the reality is my ability couldn't possibly explore either chassis to the full so like Martin I reckon the M4 would suit my situation better despite not being the better performance car so I'd pick the Beemer.

One thing that needs to be said about depreciation, yeah like for like a 911 will lose less than an M3/4 but this 911 is already between 13-24 months old so a very large chunk of its depreciation has already happened. So if practicality isn't an issue then the Porsche is the one to pick....just not my choice.

I think the whole scare-propaganda surrounding the M3/4 needs to be addressed. Is this real? Will the cars actually be a bit scary to drive?

Shouldn't we wait until we have read some proper tests of the M3/4? And comparisons with the Carrera S are surely to come as well!

I've never owned a Porsche but what about insurance, warranty, services, repair parts, and fuel costs etc etc compare to a M3?
and is this poll based if I'm allowed to buy another car or if I pick a M3 , is it the only car Im allowed to own? I mean , sometimes I need the interior space and to be able to transport 3 adults in my car, not easy If Im only allowed to own one car.

Insurance on Porsche's isn't bad at all, cheaper than Mitsubishi Evo, at least mine was... Reliability? My last BMW 335XI with DI inline 6 turbocharged motor (similar to what's in new M4) started falling apart at 60K miles. Every gasket on the top of the motor failed including Head Gasket. Electric Water Pump failed, three times the cost of what the water pump was on my 997 Carrera S. Spark plugs? Bespoke to BMW, no other car used them, cost more than Porsche again. I'm on my second 911, and I have a very hard time stepping away from them to try something else because it's so everyday useable. I can fit as many groceries in it as I can my Wife's '13 S4. My first one was AWD and the one I own now is 2WD and it bahaves in the snow almost as good as my old one. I'm not scared to drive it in snow at all, whereas if I had a M4 it wouldn't ever see a snow flake as I think it would be a ditch magnet.

Reliabilty? My current 997 has 90,500 miles and the only thing I've changed is the water pump which is basically a 60K maintenance item. My old one had a clutch accumulator tank replaced at 40K and the power steering master cylinder, but other than that it was flawless.
