I don't care what anybody tells me, a coupé has two doors and a sedan has four - that is not some old fashioned notion martinbo, that's just reality. The CLS is a sedan - that is just the way it is - it is the same reason a cat can never be a dog.

But please, be my guest, if you want call the CLS a coupé, then the marketing people at Daimler Chrysler have done a great job.

I'll just be that annoying little voice in the crowd saying - "the Emperor's wearing no clothes"

like you said Roberto , I dont care what anybody tells me. We simply has to decide for ourselves.

- I'm surprised to see you defending the CLS's coupé status Just_me..........are BMW also planning a, so called, "four door coupé" or something? :D

Roberto, this debate has to be one of the most contentious and enduring automotive discussions on the web. Back at GCF I got caned for my assertion that Mercedes Benz were more than vindicated in calling the CLS a coupé.

When I look at the whole form that is the CLS, I am left convinced that -arbitrary count of door apetures aside - the CLS is nothing less than a large coupé. The high belt-line, very shallow DLO, cab-backward stance, sloping rear roofline over the rear wheels and plain old proportion all combine to create what has to be, unmistakably, a coupé.

In my, personally subjective but well balanced all the same, humble opinion. :D ;)

I coined the term Saloupé ages ago on GCF. I should've copyrighted it.

Ha ha - I wouldn't worry too much martinbo - I think that term is safe - lol :D

There is no doubt that the CLS's designers have been very clever amalgamating two distinct body types in to one car design - the CLS will undoubtedly spawn many imitators and will become a classic of our time I think.

And anyone that says it isn't a coupé is stuck in an old-fashioned paradigm about cars with four doors.

Well, i'm stucked! It's not a coupe for me and definitely not a best design. :D

:t-cheers:

The cls will become a classic no doubt.. this car will have many followers.. there will be a VW,Porsche.. 4door coupes we know that.. and i thing BMW and AUDI will follow.. and if they do.. then the rest of the world will to...

I guess many of you don't know that SEAT is calling the new LEON a 5 door coupe? Soon we will have 6 door, 5 window and 6 seat coupes. :t-crazy2:

If there is one four door coupe that i like it has to be this one:

Im sure you will love the new Audi 4door coupe when it comes out.. :ring:

I'm not sure that the RX8 can be called a 4door coupe since the bak doors can't be opened independently.

For the moment there is no plan for an Audi 4 door coupe. :D

But if it comes..you will love it.. it can look like a box.. but you will love it.. :D

Maybe, but to me those two things behind the front doors that can open still count as doors, so it qualifies as 4 doors.

As for SEAT and their '5-door coupe'.. if they do, then, although it may seem unlikely to us 'old timers', people may come to eventually not associate the word 'coupe' with '2 doors' in any strict fashion, but to refer to a particular look or some other characteristic. That's what happens when words are used loosely, and that's how language changes.

I guess Mercedes first copied the four-door coupé idea, then they copied those wheel arches :D
