CLS Carlsson Does the New 2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS Sports Saloon

The new CLS won't be arriving in Mercedes-Benz dealerships before the end of January 2011, yet German tuning firm Carlsson has already unveiled its performance and styling program for the second generation of the banana-shaped sports saloon.

The German tuner revamps the Mercedes model's exterior with a comprehensive aerodynamics package comprising of a restyled front bumper that incorporates a lip spoiler and LED fog lights, side skirts, a rear apron with a built in diffuser and space for the new rectangular-shape tail pipes, and a boot lid spoiler.

The side air outlets, revised grille and the new bonnet with power domes are also part of the package, which can be complemented by a choice of alloy wheel designs.

For the interior, Carlsson's menu includes an Alcantara sports steering wheel, pedals and foot rest made of brushed aluminium, plus unique floor mats featuring the firm's logo with a matching boot cover.

The tuning house offers performance upgrades for the CLS 350 CGI petrol and 350 CDI V6 diesel models. With the CK35 kit, the V6 petrol engine's output is lifted from 306HP and 370Nm to 333HP and 410Nm. As a result, the car's 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint time drops from 6.1 seconds to 5.9 seconds.

Thanks to the firm's C-Tronic DIESEL POWER electronic tune, the 350 CDI produces 320HP and 780Nm of peak torque, up from the stock model's 265HP and 650Nm. This allows the diesel-powered to go from 0 to 100km/h in 5.9 seconds instead of the standard 6.2 seconds.

Other performance features include Carlsson’s patented C-Tronic Suspension system that can lower the vehicle's ride height by up to 30 mm, as well as constantly adjust the spring travel depending on the road conditions.

Finally Carlsson produce a decent optical kit. This one is very flush with the lines of the CLS.

Whack. The side vents, and blocky side rockers look dated compared to the cars sumptuous sheetmetal, and ruin the whole thing.

These tuners have no style, or class anymore. What happened to the old days, when they produced appropriated kits that subtly enhanced the sportiness? These new kits on the new Benzes are manic messes.

The automobile manufacturer Carlsson uses the elegant concept of the new model generation of the CLS (C218) as a basis to perfect it with even more elegance and sportiness.

Thus, the exterior has been refined with a comprehensive aerodynamic package. The styling kit includes a new front spoiler with front spoiler lip RS (also available in carbon), side skirts with integrated air inlets, power domes on the hood and fender inserts (optionally also made of carbon) with stainless steel grille inserts.

The LED front fog lamps complement the visual appearance and also increase road safety. The rear spoiler with the rear apron and the integrated diffuser for added downforce ensure better grib and contact with the road. In addition, the stainless steel rear silencer and the two oval tailpipes so typical of Carlsson generate a remarkable sound.

Performance increases are available for both petrol engines as well as for diesel engines. For the CLS 350 CGI the Carlsson CK35 kit elevates the power from the standard 306 bhp (225kW) to 333 bhp (245 kW). The CLS 350 CDI features the additional control device Carlsson C-Tronic® Diesel POWER which increases performance from 265 bhp (225 kW) to 320 bhp (235 kW). Both performance enhancements still meet the EURO 5 emissions standards.

The optics package further includes the new Carlsson wheel 1/10 in three new paintings, the intelligent lowering Carlsson C-Tronic® SUSPENSION and a high-quality interior upgrade. A TÜV certificate is always available for all components of the package so that they can easily be registrered in the registration papers.
