This ultimate driving machine title is not going to last too much longer if they keep going the way they have been. I read a funny little bit in Wheels magazine about the 5-series. Title was 'Sheer driving pleasure now optional'. It was pointing to the fact that it takes a lot of non standard and EXPENSIVE options to make the 5 drive the way one would expect. At the time of launch I was incredibly annoyed at how BMW only released option laden cars for test drives. Now as jurnos are getting their hands on less well speced vehicles the truth is coming out. In standard spec the ride and handling have been described as being inferior to an E. Yes even handling.

BMW is clearly ditching the ultimate driving machine focus on mainstream models. All their newer models are notably softer and are gravitating more towards MB's place in the market.

Coolest brand? Maybe still in the US. But in other markets its quickly becoming AUDI if not already.

I’m glad Zetsche recognised MB needed to stop trying to outdo everyone at everything and has blasted the brand back to its core values. Let’s hope BMW doesn’t try to get too close in this respect.

Speaking on handling. There's a recent article on the 5'er that says it got a .84 on the skidpad, which is not performance oriented in the least.

Guys, don't you think THE CUSTOMERS are the valid entity to give a finaly vote / judgment what "Ultimate driving machine" is & what not? And not the journalists who have their own criteria.

Yes, measured data ... But how many daily drivers bring their cars to the edge? A very small percentage! And I doubt many 5er owners care if the skipad g is 0.84g or 0.92g. But sure the / testers journalists do - because it's their job to test that. Although it does not matter to many in this segment. And that's the point I'm making here: most customers have different criteria & expectation than eg. journalists & enthusiasts do. But I'm sure there are not many enthusiasts among regular non-M 5er & 7er customers (anymore).

Also: who said the regular customers like the performance being delivered in a raw way ... like enthusiasts & journalists mostly do? In the latest years most BMW customers want the performance to be delivered in a very controlled & civilized manner.

And again: "Ultimate Driving Machine" is just a mere ad slogan which can be communicated in different ways. It's not a fact! Do you really believe BMWs are THE ultimate driving machines? What about other more exotic brands like eg. Porsche, Ferrari, Lotus, Lambo etc? Not to mention the supercar brands like Pagani, Koenigsegg, McLaren etc... Do they even count?

Or it should BMW deliver that promise only when compared to ... what? ... Audi, MB, Lexus, Infiniti, Jaguar only? Or Porsche is also included? What about Lotus? Or even Nissan & Toyota? Or Ford. Honda & Acura as well?

And which segments should be included? Only the ones BMW competes in? Or also the segments where BMW have no car to compete: eg. in the segment of R8, SLS, LF-A etc?

Does the slogan refers to the particular products / models, or to the whole brand?

Should BMW perhaps put a star mark in the end of the slogan, with a remark @ the bottom of the page, explaining which models, segments, brands etc are excluded from the "ultimateness"? :t-hands:

Please, enlighten me, how do you see & perceive that promise of "ultimateness", and what EXACTLY do you expect from it to deliver. And in regard to what ... of course. :t-cheers:

BMW are the one who came up with Ultimate Driving Machine. So you tell me what the customers are supposed to think.

In my opinion, and as a possible BMW buyer, what I would like it to deliver is this:

The perception of a more raw, compared to the respective price rivals, driving experience, while mentaining some "neccessary" luxuries, like proper soundproofing.

It's all about the perception of the driving experience! You know it better than me, and you also know that the driving perception is depended a lot on the software nowadays. Yet, software could be used in such a way to offer some more rawness. Or at least do so in more affordable versions of the mainstream models, and not only on M or GTS for example.

I'd say that there's still a good number of middle-class fellas that still want some more driving fun with their bimmers...

:t-cheers:
