BMW scraps plans for R8 rival

Maybe when they were all "Ultimate Driving Machine", but now, when eco friendliness and design is more important, a car á la R8 is not needed anymore. What would make more sense would be a hybrid/electric sort of performance oriented 6-series sedan version.

How has the R8 sold relative to its closest rivals - in particular the 911?

^ Good question. 2010 Audi sold almost 3500 units split between the v8 and v10, but which Carreras do you compare it's sales with, I think it must be the C4S and Turbo because both models better match the drivetrain layout and price of the Audis though I still think it's sales will be significately more but even with less sales it was the right move to develop the R8 because it's don't wonders for the brand as a whole.

Another thing Audi have a major advantage over BMW not having to develop a complete drivetrain and engine from scratch, plus through their purchase of Lamborghini they have a better understanding of the market and the potential of their R8's sales. For BMW it would be more guesswork of sales and more expense to get up and running but I still think it's necessary for them to have a supercar in their lineup, much more so than their F1 programme ever was as all it proved was they were an exceptional engine manufacturer where as a supercar would show the world they are great at the whole package right up to the highest of level.
