BMW has lately been a favorite target of armchair design critics. But while it might appear to be losing the battle, it seems to be winning the war, racking up an impressive collection of awards from those who actually know design. The latest round of honors come by way of the red dot Awards for excellence in design. In total, six vehicles designed by BMW or its DesignworksUSA subsidiary will receive the coveted awards, with two of these recognized as the “best of the best” in the category of automotive, transport and caravan design.

The BMW 3 Series convertible and G 450 X motorcycle both received special recognition in an already impressive field of finalists. The new X5 sport activity vehicle and 1 Series coupe are among the thirty products to make the cut, as is the Rolls-Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe and BMW’s HP2 Sport motorcycle. BMW’s DesignworksUSA also mastered sea and air, winning awards for the Zeydon Z60 luxury yacht and the interior of the Embraer MSJ business jet.

The jury also recognized several “honorable mentions” for the first time in its 53-year history, and the BMW Group was on the receiving end here as well. The M3 coupe, the MINI Clubman and the F 800 GS motorcycle received special mention for their successful design solutions.

The red dot Awards will be handed out on June 23, 2008 at the Aalto Theatre in Essen, Germany

:t-cheers:

The Mercedes R-Class also won the Best of the Best Red Dot Design Award (back in 2006)... So BMW plays in the same league as the R-Class...Kudos! :D

Maybe it's good Mercedes doesn't get too much of these awards? :D

j/k of course!

I don't like that chair all that much either....well maybe in a modern kitchen, around the bar.....hmmmmm.....no!

I don't get it... Who on earth can give the Best of the Best to the e93 and the honourable mention to the e92 M3??

BTW... I'm not jealous, it's good news for Beemers...
I just thought funny that the e93 is "better" than the e92, especially in M3 guise... And it reminded me that the R-Class has the Best of the Best too, 'cause I don't see Best of Best of what the R-Class is :D...

Because not everyone is a sports car nut like us. E93 has an advanced folding roof that doesn't compromise the looks of the car. Plus it looks great with the top down as well, which is why it received this award.

Personally, I'd never pick an E93 over an E92. If it was up to me, I'd ban cars with sunroofs :D

P.S. Can't see the chair right now, I'm at work and it's blocked, hehe

I don't see the e93 as particularly graceful with the top in place. But it sure looks very nice with the top down. However, the e92 looks much better in my eyes. Even in standard, it looks very good, and in M3 it's even more impressive...

But it doesn't matter, I'm no Red Dot judge am I?:D

PS: you don't miss anything with the chair, it's not particularly impressive.

Hu-hu-hu, this is the post-of-the-day & yes, my hunger is over & I'm not eating today :t-woohoo: ...!
