With emissions and fuel-economy regulations getting tougher on both sides of the Atlantic, BMW has decided it no longer needs to offer V8 diesel engines in its lineup. Officials feel modern turbocharging and direct-injection technology has reached the point where smaller capacity six-cylinder and even four-cylinder engines offer more than adequate performance for customers looking for fuel-efficient diesels.

BMW plans to end production of its V8 diesel engines and will no longer offer the option for its future models, although the current lineup will remain. Speaking with Auto Motor and Sport, CEO Norbert Reithofer said BMW would be focusing on its six-cylinder engines as it attempts to improve its emissions and fuel consumption levels in light of stricter regulations set to roll in over the next decade in both the U.S. and Europe.

The source also claims that Mercedes-Benz is planning to do the same, although no official word has been released.

The move makes sense if you consider that a majority of buyers looking for diesel are doing so because they’re seeking better fuel economy, not more performance. It will be interesting to see Audi’s response as it has just released a new V12 TDI oil-burner and is planning a more powerful version of its current 4.2L V8 unit.

Thanks!! Great news. In my opinion, this is the right decision! The 6-cylinder diesel has a lot of capacity etc…

Pretty logical move imo.
The end of hp-war is beginning... And big diesels are the first to suffer...

If BMW, and surely MB does it...What will do Audi/VW with the V12 TDI? They'll be alone, like they are with the V10... Will they be the only one to offer giant diesel, whereas MB and BMW will give almost the same power with much smaller and lighter engines?

I didn't even know they had V8 diesels and now they are gone. :D

330 hp is more than feasible with current 3.0 d engine, and never forget that if anything the 6 anda 4 pot diesels will be combined with an electric motor, which will deliver better eocnomy and V8 equivalent performance

I'm sure the V8 diesels didn't do that good even though I still find them fascinating. It's a good thing that BMW can focus more of their attention on their 6 cylinders, which is after all what they do best.

I didn't know that BMW were ending production of their V8 diesels, but considering, as far as I know it's only offered in the 745d, they couldn't have sold too many. Might as well focus their efforts on the great 4 and 6 cylinder engines!

I wonder how long it will be before, we'll be reading the same about V8 petrol engines!

BMW M to go TURBO!!!

BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer said in an interview with Auto Motor und Sport that BMW will replace the current generation of V8 diesels with turbocharged I6 engines.

This is a bit surprising the V8 diesel, is the most popular engine in the european luxury class (~40%). Unless Audi and Mercedes follow suite (unlikely, considering Audi just built a V12 TDI) BMW is going to have an image problem imo.

He also said that future M engines will "proberly" also be downsized and turbocharged.

Yeah, I wonder if VW/Audi will continue pushing big diesel engines - I can see how they make sense in SUVs but sports cars??

Very interesting move,i wonder if it has to do with the financial status of BMW?

IMO MB should do the same the sales of S420CDI is like 1% of S class sales, pointless offer IMO.

lol I didnt even know BMW made a V8 Diesel. We never ever got the 745d here, only the 730d. btw, was the V8 Diesel NA or FI?

not really, but an NA diesel produces less power than a cigarette lighter, so all modern diesels are turbocharged

The AMS article is pure BS and i'm waiting for Eni to comment on this MA article. 1st time i think something is fishy about MA's article...:eusa_thin

:t-cheers:

Interesting. Whatever one German does the rest follow. Look for Mercedes to do the same within a year I bet. Then again they did show a GL420 Bluetec at Detroit last year so MB may go on with the V8 diesel a little longer at least if diesels catch on in the U.S. market like they want them to.
