Before the A4 and C-class we still had compact saloon rivals from the 80s with 4 rings and 3 pointed star fight it out with the Audi 80 and Mercedes 190.

Interesting facts for each model:

Audi 80:
  • CD Factor of 0.29 in 1986.
  • Fitted with Procon-ten safety steering column which was tested to be as safe as a drivers airbag. Pulled the steering wheel away from driver in accident by tensioned cables.
  • Fully Galvanized body.
Mercedes 190:
  • CD Factor of 0.33 in 1982
  • First production car to have a multilink independent rear axle.
  • Had an eccentric single wiper that cleaned 86% of the windscreen

I've owned both. I must say, the B3 Audi 80 1.9E was the more satisfying car (versus a previous W201 190E) despite the small horsepower deficit. Meticulous attention to fit, finish and material quality. Mechanically/electronically bullet proof. And personal dealerhship/shop experience was far more pleasant with the Audi than with the M-B. Not that the W201 was a bad car, mind you.
