Of the VW and the Audi, the Phaeton is narrowly the more comfortable and complete chauffeur's car, but owner-drivers are much better off with the A8L. It is crisper, quicker, and more modern-a clear case of stylish elegance beating classic opulence. But the question is whether you really need, or want, the W-12 over the V-8. We're inclined to believe that you won't. The twelve is a lot thirstier, more nose-heavy, and much more expensive. What you get in exchange are marginally smoother running, a substantial boost of midrange torque, more speed off the line, and a more prestigious badge on the trunk lid. That's not the stuff with which a sound business case is made.

This is again an old article... But well worth reading. :usa7uh:

It's like an old world vs. modernist approach, when comparing the Phaeton and the A8 respectively. Interesting how they describe the Phaeton as a cruiser and a more traditional automobile, while the A8's more hard-edged and more youthful.

Either is good for me... VAG makes one of the best cars in the world.

Interesting article Mirage77.

Now my question to you is, what are you going to suggest to your dad, he gets, when it is time to replace his beloved Phaeton? ...the next A8 perhaps ...or will you suggest the new 7 series? ...I just have the feeling you and your dad make these decisions together.;)

Well it all depends on what's available in the future. Now he has two cars, as he gets older he'll probably settle for one car only... I guess we'd be considering the AM Rapide, Porsche Panamera, next Maser Quattroporte and the usual German suspects the S-Class, the A8 and the 7er. If the Phaeton's still in production, that'll fit into the mix as well. My dad typically goes for the non-conventional choice.

Yeah I guess you can say we make these decisions together. My dad doesn't really follow what's on the market so I advice him on what's available and what has been said on the models. That said the final decision is still his and he'll never settle for anything less than a German car. ;)

LOL, that sounds much like me when I was your age (sorry to sound like an old guy here :D ), I always was enthusiastic to help my dad choose a new car too :usa7uh: ...gosh I'm sentimental sometimes :)

Yes, I treasure such times indeed... Because in the future, I'd have to use my own funds to buy my own car. When that happens I can only afford a banged-up Japanese tincan. :D
