Comparison tests Autocar: Merc A45 AMG vs VW Golf GTI vs BMW M135i [VIDEO]

The new S3 is one example of offering similar levels of traction but without the trade off of ride quality and if you re-read my post you will see that I am unwilling to except this level of stiffness, you on the other hand might feel differently.
I am simply saying the reviewers thought it was an acceptable trade off, there for they did not mention the A45's ride quality. The S3 was not included in this test so we can't draw any conclusions yet.

Frankly I don't see the need to make a car overly stiff, especially a hatchback which is still regarded as a family car and not an all out trackday special like a GT3.
That is fine, there are cars out there to suit every preference.

Bad review for M135i. What heppened to BMW's handling and steering? No more the ultimate driving machine?

Ultimate driving machines? isnt M suppose to be that and M135i isnt a true M.
So you think that the X5M qualifies as an "Ultimate driving machine" but the M135i does not?

"Ultimate driving machine" is a BMW advertising slogan that has been used in adverts for all types of BMWs, not just M products.

I dont think BMW is the ultimate driving machine, never been and never will be. Only a fool fall for fancy marketing slogans. Sorry Ace , wrong person to speak to about this subject ;)

No need to apologise to me, I'm not particularly loyal to any brand. You may upset some other people with your comments though.

Maybe!

anyway, I have Fiesta ST on order. I bet I will have just as fun with it as I would with a M135i.

Compare this with Steve Sutcliffe's review of the M135i previously.

Oh, that is news to me. I thought "ultimate driving machine" referred to all BMWs and not only Ms. Greater news is that is has never been the case, those were only marketing slogans.

There definitely is something wrong going at BMW, just as it was the case at Mercedes some years ago and they lost their place. Anyway, there has never been anything eternal, there are always ups and downs. Hard to tell if BMW is at early or late, recession or recovery.

- it's 'growing pains'. They're coming to terms with being a fully global mass producer, covering FWD and RWD, $20k cars to $200k cars, 2 million plus units a year instead of under 1 million a decade ago. Plus, 'the farm has been bet' to an extent on the whole electric car 'i' brand thing, which has probably understandably distracted the focus from the more bread and butter models. It will take time to resolve being the chippy, outsider underdog of the 70s 80s 90s, against the likes of the established Daimler-Benz, into one of the establishment and slow-moving orthodoxy themselves.

What a goofy review/comparo. It seems like they brought the other two simply to make the A45 look best. When you compare a 355hp AWD Merc to a 320hp RWD BMW and a 227hp FWD VW, you kind of have to expect these results...

More realistic would have been an A250 vs. BMW 128i vs. VW GTI/Audi A3 2.0T (see video below for something similar...) and/or A45 AMG vs. BMW M135i vs. VW Golf R/Audi S3.

IMO, it is a win for the GTI just for being considered in this group. And that the reviewer concluded that if it were his money, he would have the GTI. I guess the biggest surprise was the M135i not fairing so well. Oh well. Pretty useless comparo if you ask me.

A45 v 135 and S3 comparo will be uploaded soon :)

Weird comparison yes, surprised by the result nonetheless, seeing M135i get at least 4,5/5 in every other review I've read.

1991 cc = 335 hp --> Mercedes AMG
2979 cc = 315 hp --> BMW
thats why mercedes is more expensive because less fuel and more power !

A comment on Youtube. I'm speechless.

Maybe not fair to include the GTi in this comparison as performance wise it's not in the same league. It would have been a better comparison if he included the Audi S3 although I think the A45AMG would have beaten in convincely. I wonder how the A45AMG would compare for driving against the Renault Megane 265? Would have been interesting!
