BMW F10 5-series vs. Audi A6 vs. Mercedes W212 E-Class (photo comparison)

Even though they all try to get more all around.. as in comfortable, sporty..sleek..
Its so clear.. still as it was 10 or 20 years ago..which car stands for what..
I think that is great.. :)

I think it's safe to say A6 is the ugliest from the bunch....

I was thinking exactly the opposite. :D It's the only one that I'd actually call a good-looking car based on the pictures we see here.

Of course, I haven't seen the new A6 yet but judging by the pictures and the way the A7 looks in the metal, I'm rather confident the reality will be just as good as the pics. As regards to the others, the E-class always looks uglier in pictures than it does in real life, while the opposite is true of the 5-series. It's one of the few cars that look worse in reality than in pictures, IMO.

Sure Mike, but you also like front wheels spinning in the snow ;)

Dunno what that has to do with anything, but when it comes to normal driving (as in A to B) in the winter, yes, I do prefer FWD to RWD. Fooling around might be a different matter. And in either respect, AWD beats both. :)

I've just had the use of a FWD A6 2.0 TDI for a week over Christmas, and due to the engine being over the driven wheels, it was amazing how it coped with the snow.

I prefer RWD in high performance cars like my M3 but in family cars like this category it's much less important. I wouldn't criticise anybody for saying they prefer the 5 Series due to it being RWD, but it doesn't mean it has to be the default choice as the A6 has it's own strong reasons for it to be the prefered option, and people who automatically go for the A6's weakness are really showing their naivety when it comes to appreciation of cars in general.

No Klier. You can have your opinion but you can't say it's "safe to say the A6 is the ugliest".

C'mon Betty, it's obviously implied in klier's post that this is his opinion. You don't have to go all schoolmaster on him. Mind that this the Internal Combustion section wherein a greater deal of latitude is allowed for, let's say, robust debate.

Certainly, you may disagree with someone's opinion and state so but there's no need to criticise the way in which that opinion is expressed.

So let's all show some tolerance ok? Thanks...

I'm sure people don't want this thread cluttered up with an argument so I'll PM you.

The F10 is a great looking, conservative car. I like the W212 much more IRL than in photo's and the new Audi's are growing on me in general. In fact, I really like the A7. The A6 might also really impress IRL as well, it's wider, a tad lower and has shorter overhangs compared with the outgoing model and that was far from an "ugly" car.

It's all quite subjective when it comes to assessing an automobiles design. In terms of content, quality and technological advancement, there is little that separates these cars. Nuances.

These photographs are a bit advantageous for the Audi, the car pictured having those fine 20" rims as compared to the more pedestrian wheels pictured on the W212 and F10. That being said, I personally suspect that the Audi will age better than the M-B or BMW. Audi applies a very economical and uncluttered approach to design. What makes some people perceive their cars as being "boring", has others appreciating the svelte, subtly athletic and timeless appearance of Audis. And this taking the Audis' slightly larger exterior dimensions, save height, into consideration. It has already been commented in the press that the F10 5 series looks a bit "bloated" when compared to the new A6 while the W212 appears very conservative (despite the rear quarter side sculpturing) and a bit less refined/a bit more contrived in comparison.

IMO it's simple and 'same old':

E-class is a mature car in the sense of what Merc E-buyers expect from their E-class Benz. Already an icon.

The BMW F10 5er is back with what 5er buyers expect form their 5er AND is the best car-in-class as it's suppose to be - and IT IS!:t-cheers:

Now then....the A6. If you're a Jeremy Clarkson you'd either have the A6 or XF.
If you're an Audi fanatic, your car has arrived.
And if you absolutely have no clue about cars and their respective brand pedigree and if you're first 4door saloon car was a VW Passat and you believe in buying VAG products, then the A6 is your upgrade.....sort of the car that's the alternative for the clueless or the M-B / BMW haters :D
Not that is by any means a bad car, just not that great either.

I have to admit, I enjoy seeing the new W212 E-Klasse on the road more than I do the F10 lately. Don't know what is - photos don't come near in doing the new E justice. I think it looks effing fantastic in real life in metallic shades of grey in particular.

All I have to say is WOW!

The F10 continues to impress the more I see it, but the same is true for the A7 which in looks the A6 shares a lot with, the E-Class is simply beautiful from the front and side profile but to me it's got the least desirable rear of the three.

Klier loves BMW first and foremost and hates Audi to death, we all know what he'll say even before he says it so no need to get to hung up on what he writes here. LOL

Frankly there's no bad looking car here and each is appealling to it's traditional fan base as one would expect them to do.

I must agree.

In darker metallic hues with the AMG cosmetic package or with some nice aftermarket rims from Carlsson, Brabus or Lorinser, the W212 can be quite the looker. It can also be very handsome in white if fitted with the above mentioned accessories.
