I didn't mean to compare the engines. All I wanted to highlight is that for a mere 102hp you don't need a turbocharger. Adding a turbocharger means increased maintainance costs and you don't want to know how much it costs to replace it, or how reliable are the rebuilt ones.I don't get your point really. It's a severely detuned engine that's available in several states of tune.
If you want to compare that Renault engine to the BMW one, why don't you look at CO2 emissions, fuel consumption and the whole lot?
Sure, BMW makes great engines in general, but not every single one of them has to be brilliant. And since you mentioned the 145, what an engine the boxer one was...A 15 year old alfa 145 1.4 has 103 hp, doesn't mean that BMW haven't always been and still are one of the best at making great hp/l! Why should they build yet another engine for 114i alone. Just not cost effective.
