Audi Wins Two "Red Dot Design Awards"

• Distinctions for outstanding design
• One of the world’s most coveted design awards
• Awards for Audi A5 and Audi R8 mailing campaigns

INGOLSTADT, Germany - December 7, 2007: This year, AUDI AG has won two prestigious “red dot awards: communication design” in the category of dialog marketing. Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen paid tribute yesterday to Audi’s creative agency gingco.net for the outstanding design of the Audi mailings.

The awards were made for the mailing campaigns for the presales phase of the Audi A5 and Audi S5, and for the market launch of the Audi R8. In its A5 mailing, Audi said goodbye to its customary catalog format, surprising readers with a high-quality, semi-transparent photo folder. What was so convincing about the Audi R8 mailing was an innovatively folded box containing an elaborately designed brochure about the super sports car.

“Audi is the leading automobile brand when it comes to design – in choosing an Audi, you’re choosing the utmost in design quality,” says Peter Zieten, Head of Communication Germany at AUDI AG. “We are pursuing the high demands that we place upon design and the language of form in all aspects of brand management. Winning two 2007 red dot awards once again demonstrates that we are setting the standard in brand communication,” stresses Zieten.

The red dot design award is one of the most prestigious honors on the worldwide design scene and has been given since 1955 by the Design Center in Essen to reward innovative, quality design. This year, the jury of twelve international design experts received over 7,000 entries from 34 countries in the categories of “red dot award: product design,” “red dot award: communication design” and “red dot award: design concept.” The winners and their clients will be featured in the “red dot communication design yearbook 2007/2008” and presented at a special exhibition to be held at the red dot design museum in Essen.

These are communication design awards ... for marketing communication campaigns. :usa7uh:

Nothing to do with car designs though ... But a nice achievement for Audi nonetheless. :t-cheers:

Yannis, it would be fair to change the title into Audi Wins Two "Red Dot Awards: communication design" :D;)

^^I think though it is important to recognize that Audi has adopted a strong design-led culture. This inevitably effects the quality of the final product too.

Audi won quite some red dot design awards ... including the most prestigious design team of the year award - back in late 90s under the Peter Schreyer leadership.

So these two awards for mailing campaigns are not as significant as some other red dot awards Audi won in the past.

So ... Audi's dedication to design-led culture is not a new thing.
Actually - Audi once was a design leader ... back in the late 90s.
Yet ... Although today they produce beautiful & great cars , these cars are not as significant for automotive design as were the Audis in the late 90s (B6 A4, C5 A6, Mk1 TT).

:t-cheers:

Lately as you know BMW hold the automotive design leader title ... confirmed by getting "red dot: design team of the year 2007" award ... under Bangle's leadership.

Btw, MB got the same award under Bruno Sacco. :eusa_clap

I really hope we will see some significant designs from Audi & MB again ...

^^You are right about Audi's design-led heritage EnI ...but they have built some very ugly cars over the years.

Also, wasn't the 1982 Audi 100 the first car designed in a wind tunnel?

I could be wrong about it being the first ...but it was extremely aerodynamic (for the time).

What BMW won is off topic really EnI. I 'm sure there was a thread back then about BMW's Red Dot Award.:usa7uh:

On the other hand you seem to forget that BMW's Red Dot award was given for designing children bicycles and coffee makers:

The BMW Group claimed the honour of “Design Team of the Year” at the 2007 Red Dot Design Awards, with the new, second generation MINI scooping one of eight awards the group managed to achieve for wide ranging designs from a child’s bicycle, to a coffee maker, to a MINI!

The award winning designs are all featured on the Red Dot website, and are as follows: Ecopod E1 compact recycler, Talea Touch automatic coffee centre, BMW Cruise Bike Junior bicycle for kids, BMW F 800 S motorcycle, BMW G 650 Xcountry motorcycle, BMW HP2 Megamoto motorcycle, BMW 3 Series Coupé and last, but cleary not least The new MINI.

True.

But you should differ product design awards from communication design (adverts!!) awards since they have absolutely nothing in common - expect being given by the same organization.

Because even Pontiac Aztec can theoretically get red dot communication design awards (for advertising) , but definitely not red do awards for the product design. :D

Like I said before: Audi got many more significant red dot awards before - for product design. So these two for advertising are not really relevant.

But the biggest issue I had with this thread is the misleading title - since product design & communication design awards are VERY different categories (in relevance as well).

It's like saying: "Oh, our movie got an Oscar" but forgetting to say it was for sound editing. :D;)

why does it matter to you so much? Does the title upset you? Is it because you are worried people might think audi won a award over BMW? :eusa_clap

^^EnI, don't you think both BMW and Audi's advertising carries with it the same design principles as the products themselves. There is a strong consistency with the whole projected perception of these brands -- and as we know, this extends to the processes of production and even the environments their products are manufactured in -- a symbiosis of aesthetic principle and the cold realities of industrial production.

Audi has nothing to prove in terms of design and doesn't need any more awards.

Let BMW win the red dot awards , after all the need them more.:D
