Audi Amps Up RS: The horsepower war reaches Ingolstadt

By Paul Horrell

Audi's quattro GmbH division, responsible for the RS models and the new R8, is working on a turbo TT RS, a V-8 RS5, and a V-10 RS6. We're not going to see RS versions of every Audi, though. In that sense, RS is to Audi more like M is to BMW than AMG is to Benz. AMG builds super-hot editions of everything in its lineup; M and RS are more selective.

The Additions To The RS Arsenal:

TT RS. A high-pressure turbocharged four-cylinder engine with about 300 horsepower will define the hottest TT. Naturally it'll have quattro drive, and the weight will reportedly be comfortably below 3000 pounds. On sale in about two years.

RS6. The current 435-horsepower V-10 will be more aggressively tuned to tip past 500 horsepower, with braking and tires to match. The torque bias will be to the rear, and wider fender flares and deep front and rear fascias will tip off onlookers. Launches after the TT RS.

RS5. The A5 two-door coupe was set for a Geneva debut. The A5 is a two-door version of the A4, and, within a couple years, quattro will wedge the R8's mighty V-8 into it, offering 420 horsepower and the RS4's suspension mods.

Are they all coming this year, or we all are going to have to wait a couple of years more?

300 Bhp for the TT-RS? Sorry, but I'm not impressed...

I was waiting something like a TT RS powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.2 V6 engine producing 400 Bhp at least, to compete with the Mercedes SLK 55 AMG and BMW Z4 M or Porsche Cayman S.

300 Bhp would be worthy of a "S" version and not the super-hot RS. And I really don't like the idea of "High-Pressure Turbo four cylinder engine". Unless of course, it comes with a supercharged together. Still, what happened to the inital plans of a 2.5 5 Cylinder 20V Twin-Turbo 330 Bhp engine?

Well I think 300 is more than adequate, The S3 "only" has 264 from I4 turbo, and has got nothing but praise when tested. Not to mention, if the article is correct, the TT will be under 3000 lbs which is less than the S3(3207lbs). So I am more then satisfied by a 300hp TTRS.

The latest rumour is that Audi will not use the 3.6 VR6 FSI engine in the TT.
The weight of the engine have a big negative impact on the driving dynamics and conering of the new TT.
There are stil two engine options under testing, a ±280 hp R4 2.0T FSI and a ±330 hp R5 2.5T FSI engine.
I still hope for the return of a 2.5T FSI R5 cylinder engine in the TTS and no TT-RS.
TTS is a name with history, TT RS is not.
There is also a Golf V RSi coming with also a rumoured 280 hp R4 2.0T FSI engine and 4motion drivetrain.

I was excited about the RS6 but now I'm getting pissed off with all this waiting! When ever the hell it comes out it will be time for what's next.

Sounds like a line up with great potentional. While I would like to see all of these models, I'd also like to see a RS Q7. Yes, I realize it would make a completely useless vehicle and perhaps one with no market. Still, I think it'd kick ass :t-drive:

I heard several times both from people working for Audi and Audi fans. The RS6 is getting a biturbo and 580hp. If thats true, dang! this car is going to kill.

Not me, I like how Audi and BMW has selective RS/M models rather than the whole model range like Mercedes AMG. It seems like over kill when it comes to the R, G-Wagan, and the GL don't ya think? The only thing not AMG'd out is the 18 wheelers.:D

daym good news! i cant wait to see the RS5 going head to head with the E92 M3! its going to be an onslaught!

Yes I do think they are overkill, hence me saying why a RS Q7 would be "useless"

Still, as we all know, Audi's RS division has a knack for making awesome vehicles and I'd like to see what they could do to a Q7. :usa7uh:

Thats esentially what the Q7 V12TDI is

Andreas i 'm not sure that RS6 will get a biturbo engine. My bet goes to high reviing version of the 5.2 lt V10 or a 5.5 lt V10 (which is the 5.2 engine with increased volume) and the output should be 530-550 hp.
I believe than a biturbo V10 is out of the question. When George Achorn (fourtitude) asked some Audi executive (don't remember his name) if RS6 will have a biturbo V10 he said no , meaning in my opinion that it will be a NA engine.

Don't forget a 4.2 V8 FSI Bi-turbo possibility, but i think it will be a atmo high rev 5.2 V10 FSI with 480-520 hp.

Guys,guys,guys...I would rather see Audi with lightweight concept like M3 CSL or Porsche 911 GT3 RS then pimped-out turbo(or bi-turbo).Just imagine, lets say,S3 with 100-150 kgs less then original version or RS4 with similar modification??Wouldn´t that be better than pushing this HP war further on:t-hands: ??

What HP war? Mercedes is killing Audi and BMW in that respect!;)

Audi

Audi AG is a German automotive manufacturer of luxury vehicles headquartered in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany. A subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group, the company’s origins date back to the early 20th century and the initial enterprises (Horch and the Audiwerke) founded by engineer August Horch (1868–1951). Two other manufacturers (DKW and Wanderer) also contributed to the foundation of Auto Union in 1932. The modern Audi era began in the 1960s, when Volkswagen acquired Auto Union from Daimler-Benz, and merged it with NSU Motorenwerke in 1969.
